It kind of depends on what you are going for, but for learning, I would just drop an 1176 plugin on the parallel buss and slam the snot out of it. Infinite ratio, fast attack, medium release. Now set your original track to the volume you want then back it off by -2db. Create an insert to split the signal to the parallel buss. Set the output of the parallel bus to -20db for starters. Usually I end up around -15. The compressed buss should add some weight to the sound.
You can also experiment with EQ prior to the compressor so that you target a certain range for thickening versus just a broad band approach. If the sound of the compressor is too extreme, which in this example it might be, just back down the ratio or the threshold. You should have a feel for what it does at this point.
