I've heard the praises But...

I have heard people saying Cloudlifter is great but, today I got to try one out and let me tell you.  If you have a passive or ribbon mic you MUST get a cloudlifter!  WOW the vocal tracks sound amazing where they just have a little more air to them then before.  The takes sounded way better with it than without it. I can actually see using less effects on the vocal track do to it.
Just my 2 cents
Tip of the day - If you have a passive or ribbon mic, get a Coudlifter!

If you want stick a microphone preamp between your microphone and your other preamp then you'd probably actually prefer using a nice preamp with a proper power supply rather than one that depends on 48vDC at some tiny millamp current. (they don't list the spec) You could actually stick a preamp with a real big power supply and a nice class A topology between the mic and the other preamp.

It will be a like having two mic preamps... you can't add them together to get the whole 130+/-dB of gain, of course... because the first one will get too loud for the second one and you'll have to turn something down somewhere... but you'll get a lot more gain than when you just use one mic preamp.

     best regards,
    mike

The FETHead is the same thing for $50 less and to me more convenient since it connects directly to the mic before the cable. Really brought my R14 to life. Now I can mic my fiddle from a couple of feet like it should be. http://www.zenproaudio.com/tritonaudiofethead.aspx
