Basics -record level vs monitor level??

My controller is a BR800 via USB to Sonar
I set it to Control Surface mode and plugged in a mic
I set up the input sensitivity and the master levels.
The track meters in Sonar are peaking but the monitor level is very quiet.
The BR 800 master level does not do anything.
How do I get the monitor up without peaking.

Are you using Active or Passive Monitors?

Are you using the "direct" outputs or the Monitor (headphones) output?

Several possible factors here not included in the description...so, trying
to, as the Eagles say, get to the "Hear of the Matter"
