When I push play, nothing happens in Sonar 7 Producer
I'm using a Lenova laptop with Sonar 7 Producer for playback of backing tracks on gigs. I have the Cakewalk UA-25UX as an audio interface. Everything has worked fine until last weekend when it would no longer play the song when I pushed play. I've done a searched to see if I can find the solution, with no success. Loop is not on. I can move to the end of the audio track, then back, or move the now time to any measure, it just won't play when I push play. I'm sure this is a simple fix, but I haven't found it. Any ideas? Another odd behavior that may be related is: when using the playlist, it will scroll through the song list rapidly without actually playing each song. I haven't tried to fix that issue yet. First I want it to just play the song. Thanks in advance.

Does this problem apply to all your Sonar projects or just one in particular? Open Console View and look at Buses and Mains. Is the Mains named "Cakewalk UA-25UX" (or something similar) and is the Master bus' output routed to this?

If the Now Time marker is not even moving, this most likely has nothing to do with routing or soundcard. How do you push "play" - with mouse in the TRansport Bar or do you use a controller? Or do you press space bar? That Play list-behaviour sounds somehow more serious to me. Have you done a virus check lately? Do you have all security measures in order?

Kalle Rantaaho If the Now Time marker is not even moving, this most likely has nothing to do with routing or soundcard. If no tracks or buses are routed to the soundcard, the Audio Engine will be off and the playback button will not respond. Of course this may not be the cause of the problem in this case, but don't rule it out until we have more information.

Test it on a new fresh project from scratch. The OP said that the sound is all there at various points of the track but they can't get it to actually play from the start. It does sound like something has been accidently altered and is stopping it as soon as it starts, so to speak. If it happens on a new project then it must be something global.

First of all, thank you for all the responses. I'll run through here and anwer the question's posed in the responses: I get the same behavour on all of the projects I open. The Master Output Buss is correctly routed to the Cakewalk UA-25UX. I've tried pushing play every which way: spacebar, clicking play with the mouse. A virus can be ruled out. This computer has never been connected to the Internet and the computer that I created the backing tracks on hasn't either. The only programs in either are music programs that I purchased from authorized dealers. Let me offer a little more information. I have never actually created a project on this computer other than to transfer a finished WAV file to it from my studio computer. I create all the track on a PC that runs Sonar 8. I simply set up a project templet that would play each of the backing tracks that I imported from the PC. Each project has only the one WAV file of one song. The laptop has no purpose other than to play the tracks on gigs. It has run perfectly up to this point, as has the PC with S8. I guess since it happens on all of the projects it probably is a global problem, I've checked to see if the soundcard is working properly in the Control Panel, and it indicates that it is. Even when I move the Now Time marker to another location by clicking that location with the mouse, it still won't move when I click play. That's the only real problem that I'm trying to solve right now. I'll address the scrolling throught e playlist issue after I've fixed this. Thanks agian for all the responses.

Here's some additional information. When I set the loop function, it will loop through the designated loop area. Also, when I push play with the loop function off, it looks as though it's trying to move before it stops. It seems as though it is somehow set to stop and start at the same location.

More information still: I just went to the playlist function and after is scrolled through all of the songs it say: "This project contains some looped tracks which could not be completely expanded". So, I think it's simply moving on to the next song because it can't move past the beginning, since somehow it's trying to loop from the same start and end point. I don't have the loop function on. However, (pardon me for not remembering the correct termonology) the little green triangle at the top if the Now Time Marker appears on both sides of the Now Time Marker. This makes me suspect that it has been set to start and stop at the same location.

I just installed my version of Producer 8 to see if what might happen with that version and I'm having the same problem. This is getting weird. Everything seems to be set correctly. It's recognizing the audio interface.

To Change the Now Time Marker Behaviour - Select Options-Global from the SONAR menu. The Global Options dialog appears. Click the General tab. Uncheck the On Stop, Rewind to Now Marker option to have the Now time marker move to follow the current Now time when you stop playback or check the On Stop, Rewind to Now Marker option to have the Now time snap back to the Now time marker when you stop playback. Click OK. I'm still thinking about this one.

Someone else did this - Under options - audio under the general tab. Playback timing master was set to -none- somehow, so I changed it to ASIO and everything was good to go again.

strikinglyhandsome1, that did it!! Thank you!! It's working fine now. I've printed out what you advised to have with me at gigs in case this problem reccurs. I don't know how these changes happen, since it seems you would have to go in and make them, but somehow they got changed between gigs while the computer sat unused. I'll blame solar storms until I figure out what really happened ;-)
