Play my Giga Files
Is there anything included in Sonar X1 Producer to play some of my old Giga files? I still have V-Sampler and could use that but I thought there might be something that doesn't require another installation.

no. tascam. I'm still bitter over the tascam gigastudio fiasco. I ended up buying Kontakt some time back so that I can play my giga files. I didn't even install gigastudio on my new system I bought a year ago. all the money I spent on gigastudio was wasted. and tascam is to blame. I will not buy tascam products now. there is a 3rd party solution, but I didn't try it. Samplelord is about $80, IIRC and plays giga files. http://www.samplelord.com/info.html kontakt will convert them (mostly) and you also get NI sounds on top of what you have with giga. so that's why I went with Kontakt

There's also http://www.soundlib.com/gplayer/ but it's $149. As I mentioned, I have V-Sampler and it works fine. Just thought there might be something already installed or maybe something better. I only have a few free gig files that I've picked up over the years so no huge investment. But I can see where you (and others) would be frustrated.

oh, I just remembered Coyote Forte will also play giga files, but it's $75, so it's still not what you're looking for. V-sampler was removed from sonar some time back and they did not include anything else which will play giga files in its place, so to answer your question directly, I still say "no."

There are also inexpensive sample conversion programs that, will convert giga (or other files) to other sample formats (sometimes with varying results if the sounds utilize more advanced features). I use ESC: http://www.extranslator.com/index.php?page=exsc

I have Kontakt and Chicken Systems Translator... but I end up using G-Player for my Giga libraries. I like how it can use the .gig files directly rather than converting them like Kontakt/Translator does. G-Player is also very quick to load, doesn't use a lot of memory (unlike Kontakt which is a beast) and just generally works--as long as the libraries aren't too complicated. If your .gig file uses GigaPulse convolution, then it's a no-go. But that's the case in general. Nothing will truly play those files.
I know the OP asked for something included in Sonar, but for what I need for my old Giga libraries, G-Player was the best solution. It's not perfect... but after fighting with Giga for so many years it's nice to just load-n-go. Plus, I don't think it has ever crashed on me. Unlike GigaStudio :)

Is there anything included in Sonar X1 Producer to play some of my old Giga files? Unfortunately, the short answer is "no". Gig format is dead (shame to see what was once ground-breaking technology just stagnate and rot) It's a royal PITA, but you'll ultimately be forced to make the jump to Kontakt... or use other (replacement) libraries. If you're dealing with advanced libraries, the conversion process can be pretty tedious and time consuming.

Unlike GigaStudio :) I can add a second nod to everything in this quote . :-) Although I also prefer the Soundlib G-Player - becuase of its native playing of the .gig format ; Kontakt seems to play friendlier with Sonar. As an insert , G-Player sometimes locks up my X-1 , But not so much in 8.5.3 So If I need to go down an " insert VST / then use piano roll to hone the part/ Bounce to track" path with a.gig instrument, I just end up doing it with Kontakt. If I wanna record the .gig keyboard part on-the-fly via Optical in ( off a second PC set up for VSTi s ) , then the Soundlib gets the call.

I haven't tried it in G-Player, but I have the Seyer Upright. Is there anything in particular that fails? I'll try to find some time to test it.

This free player's pretty popular and is supposed to be quite efficient (It's mentioned often at another forum). Also, despite the name, it is multi-platform: http://www.linuxsampler.org/ I've never tried it - the webpage seems overly techie and unintuitive to me (Probably due to its linux origins) - but, again, it is free, works on Windows, and is often recommended for folks who still have Giga libraries.
