IK Total Workstation 2 or Komplete 8?
Great promotion running for the Total Workstation 2 Bundle that's half off the retail price, but is it worth the investment as far as instruments and sounds compared to the higher priced Komplete 8? Does anyone own both, or even an older version of Komplete? Which bundle would you keep if you could just keep one?

Komplete 8 will be cheaper in July/summer. They've always had a summer sale, especially if they bring out Komplete 9. Komplete is great, especially as it has the brilliant Kontakt as part of it. You can get older versions on KVR - great value. Good value on the workstation - if you want what's in it.

I don't own both, but I have a lot of IK products (e.g., Miroslav) and Komplete 7. Komplete 7 is a phenomenal package though I use less than 1/4 of it. If you have nothing else, you'll get wonderful drums (Abbey Road), a very nice piano (Alicia's Keys is included I think, as well as the uninspiring but competent suite that used to be called Akoustic Piano), the excellent Scarbee electric pianos and B4 replacement "vintage organs". As you can tell, I'm mostly looking for traditional sorts of rock instruments. Being completely honest, the only Kontakt/Komplete instruments I routinely use right now are the e-pianos and vintage organs, simply because I got used to different piano libraries earlier, and because I already had Superior drummer by the time I got the Abbey Road sets. However, I'd be quite able to do what I want to do if *all* I had was Komplete 7 (or 8), I'd just have to learn different ways of doing it. So for me, a big thumbs up to the Komplete package.

Honsetly now you give me 2nd thoughts on komplete 8. haha Now i have more reason buy yamaha motif rack xs and use it with ivory.

I'm shopping for an instrument bundle too... just makes sense to save a bundle by buying a bundle. Anyone with any input on any of the included Total Workstation 2 instruments? Sonik Synth 2 seems enticing... Or does everyone mostly use Komplete? $159 seems like a great bargain - should we all be passing this up to get Komplete?

i find the IK stuff you have to work at - i mean the patches sound duller/less inspirational that NI - you really have to go into the patches and adjust parameters - which is fine - but the interface for IK stuff is so annoying (so small!) but in the end there are some great sounds there. i don't have Kontakt but i have guitar rig and a few drumplers that use Kontakt player, and i like the flexibility and mixing options in an easy skin which kontakt has. so i'd say NI win the ease of use contest from useability and 'out-of-the-box' sound but the IK products have layers which can be tackled; but 3rd party libraries only ever use Kontakt and not IK Kontakt for me, if you can afford it...

+1 MGH I have most of IK's synths and Sonik Synth2 has probably the best quality sounds......they all use SampleTanks engine, so all the sound libraries can be in put one folder and only SampleTank needs to be loaded. I got in some of IK's group buys and ended with a ton of libraries. Like MGH said, you have to do a bit of work to get them to sound fuller & "phatter". That being said, I also have the full version of Kontakt and straight out of the box, the quality of sounds are so much, much, much better than IK's. There's also plenty of 3rd party samples available for Kontakt. I also think that NI's synths maybe geared more towards the electronic genre, but Kontakt is the golden child which has something for everyone and everyone should get this. If I had a choice of choosing between IK's stuff and Komplete.....I'd definitely go for Komplete 8 as the quality just speaks for itself.

I plan on getting Kontakt myself. Just browsing through a few of the factory selections I have here convinced me. Though I do already have a few things included in Komplete, I just don't see the need for all the rest of stuff on my end. But I can see how it's a wise "investment" for some.

Zo what killed me about ik was the interface and the workflow speacially the presets selection ....a real deal breaker for me I they keep prices like this and update the player : the will make hits !! I do have Sample Tank XL installed and I realize reading your post that I avoid it for that exact reason - selecting/switching patches is a click-fest, and considering how tiny the GUI is, I prefer not to use it. And TBH, I don't think that those libraries are on par w/ what's out there these days. I also have SampleTron - I absolutely love the sounds in this one, but once again they're not as accessible as they should be. So the Bundle is a no go for me. I couldn't care less for Moogs and Sonic Synths. Miroslav might have been nice, but since the only way to get it at a discount is to buy all the stuff I don't need or care for, just too bad. That plus the hassle of using ST pretty much kills it.

Also lot great drums abby road studio drums. Plus kontakt can play third party or any file format, and nice sampler. Komplete 8 is decent only because there are so many third party libraries that work with Kontakt. The output routing is horrid for Kontakt when you use instruments like drums that you want to send to multiple separate tracks. Abbey Road Drums in the new Komplete are just fantastic sounding though. The synths that ship with Kontakt have a lot of third party library support and they are actually decent. The acoustic pianos that ship with Kontakt Komplete are flat out dreadful. I have Ivory 2 Grand Pianos and Upright pianos and there just isn't even a comparison. The differences are not subtle. Alicia's Keys does NOT ship with Kontakt Komplete. The Scarbee Mark IV electric piano is very good. The strings are serviceable as background but after getting Kirk Hunter Strings I have never even bothered with them. Ken

the thing with kontakt is thats's NI's main bread winner... soo they make Komplete rather attractive, pricing wise. yep it's a lot of dosh, but if you can use say 60% of the instruments on it.. works out not too bad. I got it from v5,6,7 when it had pro53 etc.. I won't buy the new ones until it's got proper synths.. I've had enough of their sound packs and them dropping them (with kore) until NI fix up, that cash goes to others like Fxpansion & fab filter.. their premium and "value" version of k8 were poles apart and purposely annoyed a fair few users no doubt.

Thanks for the replies, I'll have to give Komplete some consideration. So what's with Kontakt? Is that no longer sold separately? Unless I mistyped it in the Search. The IK stuff doesn't seem up to par with NI's from what up gathering but their upcoming release of Sampletank 3 may or may not even things up in the sampler department. We'll have to see what other products or product upgrades they have up their sleeves.

So how does the Mirsoslav Orchestra compare to the orchestral patches from Kontakt (and DimPro's)?

SEVerstraten So how does the Mirsoslav Orchestra compare to the orchestral patches from Kontakt (and DimPro's)? I'm not sure which Kontakt patches you're asking about but......I do have Miroslav's (full version), Kirk Hunter Strings (Diamond Collection), & Dim Pro. In order of quality, playbility, easiness to manipulate, & overall Wow factor: 1 - KHS for Kontakt - Excellent/hands down the best out of the 3 I have and you can use these patches as is....just inspirational!!! (generally, most if not all instruments made for Kontakt are simply just higher quality IMHO. 2 - Miroslav - Very good and has a ton of content (including good choirs) - with very little tweaking, you can get a convincing sound that sits really well in the musical bed. 3 - Dim Pro - Good, but I've gone to the other two since getting those.

Miroslav. Listen to the demo video on IK site. It's an accurate little summary. I like it but I'm a casual user of orchestral stuff. People who do a lot tend to use other programmes - newer, bigger and subjectively better for them. The GUI is a bit dated and should given a modern makeover. Underrated because newer stuff comes out but I like it how it sounds. Orchestral plug-ins are like drum vsts and it's personal taste. It has a smooth sound rather than the sharper sound many have today. When on sale, it's a bargain.

Thats actually one of the best descriptions I've heard of Miroslav. Its smooth, warm and buttery compared to a lot of "newer" string collections. Miroslav Philharmonik was the first big sample library that set the standard. http://www.ikmultimedia.com/philharmonik
