would appreciate some feedback on this track

http://soundcloud.com/benjamin-chisholm/against-the-wall-20120311-demo

Hey all, I've been working on this recording of one of my band's songs for a couple of months and got to a point that I thought it was good enough to want to master it to a quality good enough for demo disks and possible local radio broadcast.  Since I'm pretty broke right now, I wanted to first try to do it myself... I downloaded the Isotope Ozone 5 demo and using a couple of the presets ("Rock Dynamics" and "16-bit CD Master.." maximizer) I got a fairly impressive improvement on the original mix.  It sounds crisper and more full.
What do you all think?

Thanks!
Benj

     Hi Benj,

This mix comes across  well in my headphones. Unfortunately I can't hear the lows but I picked up higher bass that blended well here. Great mixing and playing. Didn't hear the mix before you used.

O5 is tough to beat when used properly. Great job!

Thanks for the feedback.  Here is a version before using Ozone:  http://soundcloud.com/benjamin-chisholm/against-the-wall-draft2b0.  Some of the levels are a little different in the mix, but it's basically the exact same song as the link in the OP but without Ozone... oh, and I changed a couple of the backup vocal parts, but that's it.

The biggest difference to me with Ozone was that everything stands out a little more and it doesn't sound as two-dimensional.

    OMG that vocalist is sick.

I really liked this track. I'm listening on a laptop so I can't comment on the mix, but the song was pretty kick-ass.

Thanks Josh!  Yeah, that's our man Brad on the mic... he's crazy-good.  Also plays a mean trumpet on some of our other tracks too!

I forgot to mention that the new mix also has an updated bass line... not a big deal, but I wanted to point that out.

On my system this mix is the quintessential heavy metal mix.  All the parts came through loud and clear, and the energy level is impressive.  Well done.

    Benj,

IMO, this sounds like a mix not a master.

Drums feel a bit compressed (which I'm guilty of at times).

The whole track feels like it's a bit muddy (no clarity) but maybe that's what you're going for.

As far as mastering I would say A/B this song against a track of a similar ilk and see if you think it is in the ball park. I imagine you find it's got a a bit of a way to go yet.

    Pretty good song though .

    Uh oh....

I just listened to the non-O5 mix. That is actually better in terms of clarity of the instruments.

If I was you I'd send the track to Danny Danzi and have him master it. That way you would learn (via hearing) what true mastering can do. I like Ozone but IMO it can only go so far. In this case I think it actually did not help. JMO.

Overall it comes across not to bad here.  Agree with Ed there are some places that get muddy.  This is in respect of this track Against the wall 20120311.

This mix Against the wall 20120311a I prefer.

    Thanks for sharing.

bapu,  thanks for the feedback.  You see, I was actually thinking the O5 version sounded bigger, not necessarily "clearer," though it has a particular sparkle and shine that gives it clarity to me.  I definitely wasn't going for "muddy."  The original mix has all of the instruments kind of in their respective places (probably could be EQ'ed a little bit better... I'm still learning that), but it just sounds flat to me... no depth, no dimension.

I definitely need to hear it or another of my recordings mastered by a real AE so I can hear the differences.  There are some subtleties of professionally produced songs that I just don't know how to capture to any respectable degree.
