Recommended USB external soundcard for X1 Producer Windows 7 64 bit PC?

Hi, I just recently purchased the E-MU 0404 PCI express soundcard and it works great with CakeWalk Sonar X1 but does not work with my other programs.  It is also a pain in the butt to configure and my guess is that it will just cause me more and more problems down the road.

So, I am planning on returning it (I'm still within the 30 days) and buying a USB external soundcard.

1) What external USB soundcards do you guys recommend for a Windows 7 64bit PC in the $150-$200 price range?

2) Also, are external USB soundcards as good a internal soundcards?  Or are they slower performance?

I was using an M-Audio Audiophile 192 soundcard on my previous computer but could not use it since it is not PCIexpress.  So, I am looking into USB now...

Thanks for the advice and help as always!

Ryan

I did have one other question though:

If I can get the E-MU 0404 working with Sony Vegas Pro 9, than I would be one happy camper.  right now, it does not want to record right.  Any ideas?  This is the one major problem I am having with it right now...

    Maybe Mackie BlackJack.

But you're not revealing much about what problem you have.

"not want to record right" - what does that mean?

No input signal at all, but output is fine?
Is it setup of ASIO or WDM drivers?

Well, it is using ASIO and it works great in CakeWalk but in Sony Vegas it "chops up" when I playback my recording.  So, it is not recording right in Sony Vegas.  Then, it will all of the sudden sound "okay" but then it will becoming completely choppy with static on another recording.  I have heard many people cannot get Sony Vegas to work with this sound card...any ideas though?

Ok I'm a little confused on this one as well, I've used Vegas and never had problems like this before.

Don't take this the wrong way but is it a legit version of Vegas???

If so then I don't know what the issue is.

My advice try one of the new PreSonus offering's they have a two in USB offering that should fit your budget and it has DSP on the input channels plus their preamps are pretty good for the price.

I can honestly say I do not know what to recommend for $200 or less as a usb interface-

I think it will simply be trial and error-

Quad Capture is just a bit above. I suspect there's a few decent ones around about that price ie just above what you want to pay. I'd be looking there.

The Roland Capture series is very good and very low latency.

Notation, the original DAW. Everything else is just rote. We are who we are and no more than another. Humans, you people are crazy.

I have a Quad Capture and can't recommend it enough. I've been using it with my laptop to record vocals recently and had no latency issues at all. I did have some very minor drop-out issues on playback, but these were caused by fragmentation on my hard disk (which is only a 5400 RPM drive).

    Cheers,
    Gary.

Quick reactions in no particular order:

Whenever anyone says "choppy playback", my thoughts run to conflicting processes and driver problems. Have you run the DPC Latency Checker, and/or Latency Monitor to determine you have no problems running audio on your PC? Do you have a wireless network?

If you know others with this card who cannot run SONY Vegas Pro, then perhaps another place to spend some time is a forum of users of that program?

Since Cakewalk products work for you but Vegas Pro does not, are there buffer/latency adjustments in Vegas Pro you can experiment with?

Software: Cakewalk by Bandlab; Adobe Audition; Band-in-A-Box audiophile; Izotope Ozone; Encore; Melodyne; Win 10 Pro, 64-bit.

Hardware: Focusrite Scarlett 18i20 2nd; Roland Integra-7; TCE Finalizer; Presonus Central Station, Behringer X-Touch.  Home built i7 with 16 GB RAM, SSDs.

About to pick the Focusrite Scarlette 2i2 up for my laptop setup. 2 input interface plus it comes with the Scarlette plugin suite which I hear is pretty good. It's only $149 most places.
