Seriously Cakewalk?

Well at least they're consistent.

Well the plan was to record a drum-line marching snare part to an existing song.
Sounds simple enough.
All I need is the metronome to give me a 2 measure count in and away we go.
Now normally when I use Sonar I know not to rely on the metronome and I always begin recording on measure 2 or 4 so that I have some 'wiggle' room.
Since this is pretty much a finished project, I've already cut out the buffer measures.

Take one:
2 measure count in working fine, first track done.
Switch out snare drums. Take two:
2 measure count in, ditto.
Drum swap, Take three:
Metronome all gone.
No count in, no metro for playback or record. Checked all settings and routing. All is well.
No metronome.
Shut down Sonar and even went so far as to reboot the whole PC......... No metronome.

Oh well, it was fun while it lasted.

Off to do some clip envelope work.
Insert a Pan envelope on a 6 measure clip. Lo and behold, the damn thing doesn't work.
Tried every possible solution and no luck.

Insert a track Pan envelope and it works as expected.

Seriously bakers?
These two problems, bugs, issues or what ever the hell you want to call them, (I now refer to them as features) have been present, reported and complained about since at least version 6.

Congratulations!
You sent me emails stating that these issues had been addressed.
So I trusted in you and came back to Sonar. Bought into the whole X1 hype with all the bells, whistles add-ons and expansions.

Great marketing scheme. You got me for a few hundred more $$$.
No more 'work around's' or 'promises'.
Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice.........
Well color me the fool.

I have had some issues with the metronome disappearing as well. Clip pan envelopes, however, are working fine here. Weird...

I have had the going silent metronome thing happen to me before X1D, and I was hoping this issue would be fixed in X1D, but I haven't been in X1 much since the X1D update, so I haven't experienced that issue, yet. But if you say it's still happening, your word is good enough for me to scare me. I sure wish Cake can get to the bottom of this metronome going silent deal, but it just happens randomly with me, and I can't find a set of steps to consistently reproduce it, so I can log a bug report for the issue. For me, the only way this going silent metronome matter is fixed is to start a new project. Then, it's back sounding.

As for envelopes, I only use volume envelopes and they work well for me since I started using X1. I used to get some crashes in 8.5 when I messed-around with deleting nodes on the volume envelope, but I've never gotton that with X1. Thank goodness.

COMPLETELY AGREE I absolutely LOVE Sonar X1 ..... it's just frigging awesome. Love it, love, love it. But, seriously.....how difficult is it to fix the metronome problems? People have been complaining about the Sonar metronome for years.... how can a company come up with such an amazing DAW and include so many awesome plugins and features, yet one of the simplest things in the world isn't fixed yet? I just don't understand it. Dear Cakewalk: please spend some time working out metronome issues..... even more important than staff view, in my opinion....

Are clip envelope and node things new in 'X? I haven't seen envelope issues since, IDK, 2, 5 maybe? (Fairly rare then I'd add.

Yeah it bothered me to see the metronome problem still not resolved.
As for the Clip Envelope, I'll just go back to not using them. At least Track envelopes still work.

Both of these issues happen randomly for me as well so it's tough to submit a Problem Report and not provide the recipe for disaster.

If I have extensive automation work to be done I just import the project into another DAW.
It's a pain in the ass, ya. But I know it can handle the job without flaking out.

I like Sonar and am comfortable with the workflow.
I just get a little edgy when simple little things like this go ignored for so many years.

Was the metronome sound source on the drum VST you replaced? Is this a bug or is this on your system only?  I will try to reproduce here later today if you can give really clear steps.

    Thanks.

I understand the frustration with a "disappearing feature" like the metronome.... but frankly, I never use it.

I always shut it off to start and use a midi drum track for timing.... even if it's as basic as a snare/kick track.

    It's easier to hear.

Rimshot, No VST involved. Real snare drums being used so that's what I was swapping out.

Herb, I do the same thing and have been since Sonar6PE when this first happened.
The problem is that this is a finished song that I had an idea to add something too.
After I already deleted the blank 2 measures I always have.

    Pretty simple actually.
My recording template has a buss named Metronome which is routed to the main outs.
Open the metronome control panel and set it to playback on record only and set a 2 measure count in.

    That's it.

Worked for two passes then went kaputz.

Opened the project today and added 2 measures at the beginning of the song with a drum loop as my metronome and finished my project.

Decided to try metronome again before I shut things down and it was working fine.

    ??????? Go figure ??????
Thanks for offering Rimshot but as others have mentioned it's a touch and go thing.
I'm just going to go back to using my click track loop I made.

I have NEVER had an issue with the metronome

Ditto, or at least never a disappearing metronome.  The only issue I have had, but not since X1, is a sometimes flaky count-in; e.g., the timing wouldn't be steady.  But once the count-in was finished it was just fine.

I'm glad that doesn't happen any more, but do feel for those that are having these issues... I'm just not one of them.  So as LJB suggests, perhaps there is an external factor involved.

Disappearing metronome was experienced by a number of people in older versions. It was linked to the groove something or other which appeared to get corrupted and only a re-install would fix it. Then it disappeared next time you opened Sonar. So it would take another installation. You kind of get fed up re-installing every time you use it. There was no cure.

Is it perhaps related to whether the audio sound is used or a MIDI note? I use the MIDI note option to a drum machine and have never had a problem with the metronome through any version of Sonar.

Having said that I do prefer to play a pattern back from a drum machine via MIDI sync, plain metronomes send me crazy(er).

What bothers me Mike is that some of us do not have this same problem as you do.  I too am sorry that you are having this issue.  I don't understand how you can start a thread like you did where you basically are stating Cakewalk tried to fool you.  This is not right.  There is something that needs to be fixed on your setup but since it is not happening globally nor is it a bug that we all experience, your jabs at Cakewalk and even your thread's title just seem over the top IMO.

Hope you get this sorted out with support.

Yeah I was a little pissed yesterday after experiencing the only 2 issues I've ever had with Sonar still existed.
I did receive emails (Back in Nov - Dec) stating that these issues were fixed and will be put out in a future patch or update.

Maybe that day has not come yet.

It's Interesting that somebody pointed out that it may be to a possible driver issue...

My computer was not-too-long-ago converted into a dual boot system, & as a result began experiencing metrenome issues for the first time...

When using my original XP version, the metrenome works flawlessly - however, when using Win7 the metrenome will cause crashing (says to be associated with 'grooveplayer.dll')... The crashes happen most if the time; my only fix is using the midi metrenome by way of an external midi sound module.

Oh & never had this problem on my new main DAW app when using it in the same system ;)

I've always used an external midi devise for my metronome.  That harkens back to day when metronomes created in computors where not very good at keeping time.   So I've been immune to any problems.

I suggest setting up your system to trigger an old drum machine or create an audio track inside Sonar dedicated to being a click.  Creating a groove clip can't be to difficult.

Sonar is not the only software I've seen this issue with,  and if it's not your software,  it's the hardware that can cause issues...

There's another recent metronome related thread where I mentioned it was possibly a VST of some sort, and I think perhaps you've just found it.   Not that a DLL has to be a VST, but considering what it does I wonder...

I don't have any external sound producing MIDI equipment or I would go that rout.
I always set up a track, drop a drum loop on it and drag it out for as long as I want.
Then when I start recording I let the loop play for 2 measures and come in on the 3rd.

The problem this time is that this is an old project and I already cut out the first 2 silent measures.
The part I added was starting on measure one, beat one.
I thought, hell I haven't used the metronome since S6PE, lets see if they fixed it yet.

In the end I added 2 measures to the start of the song and dropped in a drum loop.
Recorded my parts and deleted the 2 measures.

And yeah Steve, it was always the grooveplayer that was the issue.
I see it gets scanned while scanning VST's but could never find it.
I believe it's actually a softsynth that we have no access to.

Every time I see the title of this thread, I imagine a late night TV show about using Sonar called SERIOUSLY CAKEWALK. It's a bit like Queer Eye For The Straight Guy only about sound engineering. I think it could be big.

    How strange is that?

Looks like the software chooses some people to annoy... (a lot of people in this case)

I never had ANY problem with the metronome... Till now, at least...

But I quit trying to use V-Vocal because it simply don't work for me... (i have to have something to complain...)

    Peace.

    Hi Everyone,

If your metronome is flat out not generating a sound, you might have an installation related problem. It's important to identify the difference between bugs and installation related or system specific problems.

I could break your metronome simply by moving a few files on your system, which is drastically different then a bug in SONAR's code. Please don't mistake me saying this as me claiming SONAR doesn't have bugs, that's not going to help anyone. There have definitely been metronome issues in the past and could still be. Nevertheless, this seems like it's an install or system specific related problem that Cakewalk or other helpful forum members could get to the bottom of.

If you guys are experiencing issues like this, I'd seriously suggest contacting us. Give us a chance, we're not all that bad. If you don't want to, you could always break everything down as much as possible on here.

What would I personally would look into? I'd start with the basics. I'm not sure if any of this was covered:

    1) Does it happen with all projects or one project? Create a brand new project and test it out.

    2) In Edit > Preferences > Project - Metronome, give us a rundown of your settings.

2a) What is Output assigned to? It is assigned to a hardware output or a bus?

2b) If it's assigned to a hardware output, do you see any activity in SONAR's Console View indicating that there is activity? Maybe you're not hearing the hardware output properly.

2c) If it's assigned to a bus, what is the bus's output assigned to? Look back to step 2b if you still can't hear it. Do you see metering at all indicating that a sound should be heard?

2d) Do the "First Beat" and "Other Beats" options actually list a sound? If not, you might be missing the actual samples that generate a sound. This happened for some people using the X1 Trial as well. You can resolve it by taking the steps found here: http://www.cakewalk.com/S...reader.aspx/2007013278

    3) Obvious question, but do you have the "Playback" and/or "Recording" options selected in the Metronome page? Try toggling them, testing, then toggling them again and testing.

    4) When opening a project, do you get a Missing Plug-ins message for "GroovePlayer? If so, you're missing the GroovePlayer.dll that actually generates the metronome sounds. This is an installation related problem and can be resolved by re-installing SONAR or by manually re-installing the correct GroovePlayer build. (We can help you with this if you contact us directly).

Lastly, if none of the above are helping, why not get on the phone with us and let us walk you through some stuff? If we strike out than that's on us to figure out what the problem is, not on you. That's what we're here for.

We can't fix things with petitions on the forums. I've been trying my best to hop on here as much as possible lately, and I know some of our other staff who work in other departments have been, but it's really not effective for any of us to support each other this way in the long run. It's also not fair for the customers reaching out directly. I just did a search against our problem reporter since the X1d update, and not a single report lists anything related to metronome issues, yet there are a few threads claiming its not working.

I hope some of the suggestions above might help.

    Best regards,

    Ryan Munnis

Thanks Ryan, I'm saving this post as Metronome trouble shooting 101 in case mine decides to vanish one day. Good job, glad to know you guys are waiting in the wings.

Ryan this was the problem for many (of those that had a problem) - the grooveplayer. What would happen is you did a re-install and then you close Sonar and the next time you open it it was gone again. Something is/was corrupting it each time. That's going back a few versions though.

    Thanks Ryan,
Yeah I have been through your list and tried them all at one point or another.
Since this seems to be random I think I'm going to try a fresh install and hope that sorts it out.

Sorry for the pissy attitude of the OP but it worried me when I hit this problem again.
I saw a recent post on the proper install path.

What is the official install order for X1d just to be sure I get everything in the proper order.
Also is there a proper way to do a complete uninstall of all registry items before doing the fresh install?

    Thanks for your time.
I know this is a user forum and not a tech support line so I really appreciate your reply.
