Track output: stereo or mono for mono tracks?

There is a measurable difference when outputting a mono track in either mono or stereo mode.

This is the little blue light icon which switches stereo on/off.

What is recommended here? It seems that Sonar wants to turn this off when I record a mono source.

Thoughts?

I always keep mono tracks mono.
The only time I might deviate from that is if I have inserted a stereo effect in the track.

EG: I always record my electric guitars as a mono input, and I would keep the interleave button set to mono. But if I decided to insert a stereo reverb, or a stereo delay, or a stereo doubler (note the word stereo) then I would change the interleave button to stereo.

But I don't often insert stereo effects at a track level. Normally I would put those on a bus, and use SENDS from the tracks to feed them. That is an entirely different topic

Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take!

Hey Winnipeg - you're pretty close to me (about 400 miles).

I guess the trouble I ran into was that I had a mono track, and then tried to used the pan envelopes on it - which didn't work unless the track was set to stereo output. So, I have now changed my template.

That's odd. The pan envelope works fine for mono tracks for me.
