Following Light, is a hard rock waltz. story: it's nice when you are lost in a world of hurt, someone comes along and offers a helping hand. Guitars used: Carvin DC200K, USACG strat, Williams Strat Hybrid amp: mesa boogie mark IIB, combination of close miced and palmer pdi-09 cab: avatar vintage 1x12, celestion heritage g12H-55 guitar effects: Barber Direct Drive SS, Tone Press, ISP Decimator, yamaha DG stomp (short tape delay in FX loop) bass: Carvin LB70 into sansamp bass DI, split thru to mesa guitar amp setup for midrange bass tone and blended with SABDI vox: ADK Hamburg, into A Designs Audio MP-1, DBX MC-6 compressor acoustics: Taylor 414, Seagull Artist Mosiac, each miced with single AT4033 Drums: created in ACID

Shoot, I didn't know Steve Perry used Cakewalk...
there's alot going on here and it's obviously seperated well. I almost feel like too much is going on, but not because that's a bad thing, but because I can't zero in on anything specific. I feel like my eyes are tracing the sounds all around my head.
The music is stellar.

What a coincidence, I just put up a rock waltz the other day. This must be the season for 3/4 time. I love this tune; it sounds so unique yet familiar. Like some of your other songs, it could have come from Revolver. It's all good here. Congratulations.

Great playing as always. I heard more Jon Anderson than Steve Perry.
The guitars come off as a bit too loud to my ears.
Drums sound like Bonham, though they need to be louder!

Love this! Great playing by everyone. Vocals are hot! Song is great and the arrangement is super. Snare is too light. I am hearing Styx? Kansas? Some Queen? Doesn't matter - you guys rock!

That's nice. Plenty of guitar ear candy. Yes, there is a lot going on here, but it moves so well, and everything is cleanly separated. I love the rolling motion of 3/4, 6/8.
Definite Anderson sound on the vox.
Interplay of the electric and acoustic guitars is quite artistically done. Tasty.
I tend to agree with jamesyoyo, and would like to hear the drums a little more proud.
All in all, a wonderful piece.

rural thanks josh! there are lots of parts that come and go, but you know, for the most part, it's just a couple of rhythm guitars, left and right, carrying the whole thing. the bass line is a melody, the guitars have 'sub' melodies, and the vocals and harmonies, so i guess there's just lots of melodies going on all at the same time. kinda of my beatles influence, i guess. lynn rock waltz! LOL makes some peoples brains go "Lawrence Welk, Lawrence Welk, Lawrence Welk, Lawrence Welk, Lawrence Welk, Lawrence Welk......"  thanks for the comments. james thanks for the listen, james. you've been very busy, so i appreciate the time to review... this IS a guitar-centric tune, it probably has the loudest guitar mix on all the songs on the new album. again, just a subjective thing, the drums sounds big and bombastic, it seemed that whenever i made them hotter in the mix, it just muddied the waters. i had to make a call.......

this started out as a bit of a HEAVY instrumental, and wound up as something altogether different....
i thought it might appeal to the heavier hitters in the crowd.
i'm gonna put on some old YES now, and start practicing.

snare....... man, snare is so hard to just nail every time. it really is.
with my superior drummer program, i spend WAY TOO MUCH TIME.... f'kin with all my snare choices.
and i'm such a snare freak.....
and i like so many completely different snare sounds, it's hard to weed it all down to just one that i could call my own (as if i was a real drummer).
this was a case of being 'locked in' to the drum track.
it's a situation of certain frequencies, plus level.
i just had to leave it where it was, i was working off of a stereo file of the entire kit already mixed down (Sony acid)
so i couldn't make changes, other than multiband processing and eq.....
i did a bit of that, but only took it so far, it started messing with the overall vibe if i pushed it too hard.
i don't know about all the old classic rock stuff, maybe a bit of rush in there? heheh, could be anything from anything i've ever heard.....

Great as always, Rob. I haven't gotten off my butt to get the new CD yet but I will. I still would love to have The Shaman Song. This tune is so well done. All of yours are so I never expect less. I thought the guitars fit well on my monitors. I do like loud prominent guitars, though. Drums sound really tight.

shaman song, is still going thru changes...
i originally wanted it to be kinda like my 'pink floyd' tune... but it's moving away from that.
i keep whittling it down, making it a bit stronger every time.
i walk away from it, and then come back.
as far as 'Following Light' goes, it's supposed to be a loud/proud heavy guitar sound, for sure.
i always just follow the gut with the general approach to a mix, i find the more i think about it, the more i muck it up!
LOL
but of course, the more i mix, the better i get.
and i learn new tricks along the way, plus,
i'm always following threads in here to learn/steal new tricks,
it's a rich pool of talent we all have here to swim in.
