Cover - Modern Day Bonnie & Clyde Barn Recording-Update and question post in tech forum

http://soundcloud.com/digi2ns/bonnie-clyde-x1-trng

Question using AN879 Analyzer posted in Tech Forum

Used Shure PG56 for everything except the Strat which had an I5 and a D112 on the kick. Recorded from a barn jam practice.

Wow, this sounds a lot like my own garage tapes from the late 70's minus the tape hiss.  You know, where everyone is in the same space using a minimal number of mics.  The actual performances are quite good.  Everyone sings and plays well, and the covers are tasty.  But, my question is:  where is the engineer?  It is so possible to engineer a live performance nowdays and make it sound like a studio experience while still keeping the live vibe.  It doesn't take that much to isolate the singer's mic and cut down on the bleedover.  Sonar is certainly capable of capturing band practices for evaluation purposes, but also capable of so much more.  Forgive me if I  miss the point here, and you're just presenting the documentation of a performance or rehearsal.  However, I've heard some live recordings here that just blow me away, and this isn't one of them.

All the best,
Lynn

I know the other ones are terrible but that was just throwing mics in a room to record and mess with the software when I first got it. I dont understand what your talking about in the "Bonnie and Clyde " song.  Just really getting into it and learning. I appreciate your advice though, every little bit helps

Wow, I never got around to "Bonnie and Clyde".  That shows the importance of putting your featured song up first.  But, after hearing B & C, I take back everything I said before.  You obviously have learned the software, and you've produced a killer track.  Only kudos to you.  I look forward to hearing your next track.

Not bad for a beginner!  One little time warp at 1:51 though. Otherwise a very enjoyable listen.

LOL Lynn, Thanks

Yeh, not sure what caused that, if it was in them playing or computer. We did all the mixes that sound ok in one take non stop. Alot of little things here and there that can be addressed but they were in a rush to get something down so club owners had something to hear before hiring them to play. Came out ok for a demo I guess. They knew I was just looking for something to learn with and helped them out along the way as well.

Any and all help, advise, or things I could do different I greatly appreciated.

Outside of the mics used, we just put up card board panels to deflect any direct noise sources from hitting the mics and draped moving blankets over the cabinets. The setup was just as it is their live performance. As for the mix, its all new and learning to me but having fun doing it  :)

Mike - I would suggest that you link directly to the song you're wanting us to listen to instead of the playlist, especially since this is the 2nd song in the list.

this really rocks!  theres some glitch distortion at 1:20.

very cool work, especiall from a barn practice!  you guys rock!

Thanks Reece
Good to hear from ya, been awhile since Ive been back in.
Yeh I was doing the direct links earlier butttttttt  Ive been working and updating the songs quite a bit so the band members could keep up and it messes with the link so I just had it set to go to the Set List. That way they always got to the most current version with a lil scrolling LOL

Hi Mike,
that's fine for the band members, but for the forum here, I'd just give a direct link to the song - t confuses people when you set up the playlist (obviously from Lynn's post above).

it shouldn't mess with the set list if you post a direct link to the song here in the forum.  like this:

Well, I did figure out which song after reading for a little while.

Sounds great to me!  Had to turn down the speakers when it really kicked in.  :)

Live, huh?  That's amazing.

The original by Travis was done the same way, we were just duplicating what they did.
As for all the songs in the 5th Gear Set List on Sound Cloud, they were all one long take non stop-Just another practice night in the Barn lol. Some off notes here and there but nothing major that cant be fixed. Finally getting down the art of controlling the bleed in the room allowing for easier mixing. Its amazing what just cardboard positioned right will do.  Still experimenting though :)

Thanks Janet

Ok I did not mind that, it was a bit too much bottom end for though.

You have the chops good voice and the playing was all there.

The start though was a tad too quite then it got really loud I'd fix that.

but I like it, nice work.

Peace Ben

Hey Mike
GREAT recording!  I really got a older classic Waylon Jennings vibe from this mix. Not from the song but recording itself, very cool.  If I had to nit-pick the mix, it would be the drums.  I don't know if its just the snare or the kit itself. It sounds to be sitting forward and dry.  Maybe, a smidge added verb/delay might give it the room/space that the other instrument seem to have. Maybe, its just me and my bad ears.  All in all a very cool sounding mix that has a classic vibe that I'm diggin.

LATER
 Kev

P.S. You should patent that sound and sell it as a verb PLUG-IN called Barn Jam.  I would buy it!

Hey Mike, I agree with the intro being a little low in volume. Man this is some serious COUNTRAY music there...I like the live feel( I guess it was recorded live) . I can see why you guys are getting gigs down there.
