Mixer/Control Surface Advice Needed
I've had a Phonic Helixboard 18FW MkII for around 4 or 5 years and have been reasonably happy with the performance in terms of both clarity of audio and latency. Recently it's started giving me a few problems with dry solder joints and, whilst I've repaired it a couple of times, it seems like a good excuse to upgrade my set up.
I also use a behringer BCF2000 controller but I'd like to be able to free up some desk space and find an integrated mixer/control surface.
I like the features of the Tascam DM-3200 with the Firewire interface but, at almost 900cm deep, it's just too big. I think the new Yamaha 01v96i would give me what I need in terms of inputs but I'm not sure about it's Sonar compatibility and I'm also a little sceptical about latency on USB 2.0 as, when I've used USB interfaces in the past I really didn't get on well with them.
Does anyone have any experience of using this Yamaha desk with Sonar X1? Specifically regarding control surface functionality, latency and pre-amp quality.
I'm also open to other suggestions sub £2.5k but it would probably need to have motorised faders as I'm just too used to them now.
EDIT: I've actually decided to go for a rackmount solution and look forward to upgrading the control surface later. Having read through many forum threads I'm pretty sure that a Fireface 800 with an Octamic II will give me everything I need.
My multitracking started with Tascam Mixer and and 8 track reel to reel so I think I was just clinging on to the mixer concept but I realised that I rarely, if ever, use anything on the mixer other than the preamps and trim controls when recording as everything else is done in Sonar.
