sound card levels

A few years ago I switched from EMU 0404 sound card to an M-Audio 44. Wanted more inputs and outputs. Recently went back to the EMU card, and I don't know if I had this problem before, but I do now. When working in Sonar, everything is loud. I have to turn down the outputs of the soundcard, so it does not clip. But, when I export to either a wav or mp3, the sound is very drastically softer, and have to turn up the volumes on the sound card. Am I missing a setting either in the emu software or sonar?
