Not That Kind of Girl

Friends (and I mean that in a pre-Facebook sense), here's a new tune I'd like you to listen to. I picked up a midi controller (M-Audio Key Rig 49) a couple of months ago and had to put it to immediate use. Sure, I'm a raw, rank novice on keys, but I'm fearless: I even did a little lead work with it. In any event, I could sure use your ears. I've developed a bad case of tinnitus over the last few years, and can never be sure just what I'm hearing. I think the mix sounds pretty good, but you never know. I think of it as a romance tale for street thugs, a Romeo and Juliet for the criminal set. Here's the link: http://soundclick.com/share.cfm?id=11511857 Pianists, be kind. It's only through the wizardry of digital recording that I sound passable, and I know it. I hope y'all like it. Let me know what you think. Thanks Mark

I put the Peon in Pianists... This has a strong Skynard vibe going on :-) That clean rhythem guitar in my right ear? I would bring it down a little in the mix, but I would also have it distorted :-)

Good southern rock here, good job.

Thanks, Robby. The crunchy rhythm guitar is in your left ear but it blends in SO SEAMLESSLY with the left hand of the piano that ....uh....well, you get the picture.

yep - that was a fun tune, Mark!

line breaks don't work on the forum in FireFox, at least not all versions.  the earlier versions and maybe the very latest versions work?  don't know, but I don't use FF.

Nice song.  The lyrics brought a smile to my lips.  The overall mix was a little low in volume, and the drums could have been louder, too, but all in all a good job.

    All the best,

Yup, fun song. Mix levels need to be concentrated on to leave more focus on the vox.

    Good job.

Cool tune, Mark.  Personally, mix wise, I think a bit more punch in the mid range would make a difference, but other than that it sounded good.

What I'm going to say here will probably get dinged pretty good.  NEEDS MORE BASS.  LOL!  I like this song, Mark, is it yours?  Fun to listen to.  I think there could be a bit of something in the mix that seems to be missing.  I can't tell you what it is.  Probably more bass.  :-)  Our last two songs have been bass heavy.  I listened on phones and monitors.  The problem is that someone else's ears might think there's plenty.  It's all relative to the listener.  No more babbling.  Cool tune!

People, thanks for listening, and I appreciate all the specific suggestions. furthermore, I agree with every one of them. It DOES need more bass....and a midrange boost....and more focus on the vox....but there's the rub, wot? Trying to balance each element without sacrificing another. and each set of speakers gives you a different response. I suppose it all keeps me out of trouble, though.

    Hey, Mark,

Very cool and fun sounding song!  Great songwriting, clever lyrics and excellent performances as always.

I've also got the same midi controller.  You should have a lot of fun using it to experiment with all of the soft synths that came with Sonar.

Very nice work, Mark, good stuff, buddy!

Thanks, Freddy, you should know! Bob, glad you liked it, but I sure could use some of your tone! Well, maybe not on this one. And, sure, it's a blast playing with the synths.
