Anyone else ever blend drum software?

I've been tweaking some old mixes lately, and I discovered something by accident. I was comparing a song using Addictive Drums and Superior Drummer 2, trying to figure which sounded best. I finally found the right sound. It was only then that I realized I had both un-muted. But I realized together they sounded perfect (for that song, of course). So lately I've been trying more of that. Makes for some interesting "kits". No phasing issues, in case you wondered.

Anyhow - just kinda thought that was a funny way to stumble onto something, and thought I'd share. Plus I was wondering if this is something everyone does and no one had told me!

I'll often layer particular drums to get a sound I'm after.  For example I'll print out the snare track on it's own to blend with a different source.

Experimentation can be fun.  Aside from plain double-tracking try slight time and pitch shifts on one of your sources.

All the time. The song I'm working on right now uses the EZX Nashville kit re-inforced w/ Steven Slate's Old Zep Kick, Snare and Tom.

I recently got Drumagog Platinum and purchased a few gog packages (as well a a hefty set of gogs already provided by them).

The beauty of this approach is that:

    a) You can blend between source track and the replacement sound
    b) Drumagog will load a drum VSTi and use that as the replacement sound
    c) you can get a three way blend bewteen the source, the replacement gog and the VSTi.

The only drawbacks I'e seen are:

    1) 32 bit only now (i.e bitbridged), so you have to point to a 32bit VSTi (i.e. EZDrummer)
    2) It seems that a saved and closed project does not retain the VSTi (i.e. EZDrummer) settings and you have to (groan) reload the VSTi each time you open the project.

Experiments often produce unexpected and good results.

Some of the most importing things in our lives are the results of an experiment that didn't go as expected.

    If it works, use it.

I'm always layering drum software - it's one of my favorite things to do musically.  Sometimes the combination is magic.  It's not limited to drums, layering almost anything is possible and often rewarding.
