Ethan Winer is my hero.
Mr. Winer, a well known SONAR user and advocate just wrote a wonderful article about mixing and listening that appears in the latest issue of Tape Op magazine. I appreciated reading it. The issues he discusses seem very familiar. It is refreshing to see some one speak on the subject. I feel that many people probably agree with what he has written, but that most people rarely take the risk of being so honest in public. I'm not going to attempt to paraphrase his essay. If you are looking for some heavy insights that will help you grow as a mixer... go find the latest TapeOp and read the end page that Mr. Winer has written. all the best, mike learned... thank you pathos.

That's why I chose CJ as my hero. Difficult to get wrong. And Macca knows Ethan's surname, of course.

I just stumbled on this old tread. 5 years ago I read an article he wrote about learning to play cello as an adult. I sent him an email and he recommended a cello teacher local to me. It worked out great and I've learned to play reasonably well, not to his level though. :) It turns out that he lives about a mile from me. I ran into him and his wife in Costco a few weeks back. He's a great guy.

Some interesting stuff there. The really interesting stuff is why different personalities still get confused by the same issues and like he says resort to trading insults. I think the biggest two factors is the market which likes to perpetuate myths in order to sell more products which again gets reinforced by those trying to justify the amount they've just spent on said products. There are likely many more reasons too but by my own personal reckoning which is not based on any science whatsoever singles those two things out as being the source of most confusion. Here even today was a post asking if the sound card had any bearing on Sonar's output. Not the posters fault but more down to the fact it is hard to establish the facts alongside so much invested in the desire to keep the BS afloat. btw I like Ethan too but I wouldn't go as far as saying he's a hero of mine, just that he found out long ago what are much more recent discoveries for me. I used to get strung up a few years ago just by mentioning the output from my Realtek was on a par with many of what people were calling 'pro-interfaces.' The facts, tests and figures bore out my findings but not many liked the idea that it was indeed largely true. Ethan would have backed me up to the hilt. I know that today. It is becoming increasingly difficult to argue the facts these days so now we see a trend of not more high fidelity but add-ons that rough up the perfection in what we are told are 'musical sounding' ways. Clever DSP's that we are bombarded with that are claimed to smear pristine audio with artistic colour in a way that you cannot argue about with mere factual evidence. It's good business and is the way of the future.

SteveStrummerUK I found the article HERE - is that all of it Mike, or is there more? Some interesting stuff there. Yes, that's it. It may seem short, but there may not be much more to say... the thing I admire about this article is that it presents info that no one can make any business of or profit from, yet it is so important and helpful to sound production people that an individual and a publication choose to share it. Good stuff. best regards, mike

Count me among Ethan's fan club, too. I actually bought a copy of his video. It includes a little Sony Vegas tutorial, too. And don't forget that Ethan's book is coming out soon, which purports to contain no less than everything you need to know about audio. Even if it only contains 20-40% of everything, it'll be quite a tome.

If you buy the book directly from Ethan, it costs $60 versus $42 from Amazon but it comes with his entertaining video - and is autographed! (I'll be ordering mine from Amazon, sorry Ethan.)

(I'll be ordering mine from Amazon, sorry Ethan.) I may do the same because of that cost difference, but in fairness it's not just the "entertaining video" being offered, but also a DVD with all the software and audio/video content for the book as a convenience to having to download it (or watch it online with lesser quality). At least that's the way I understand it.

I just came across this thread, thanks so much guys. >>> I'll be ordering mine from Amazon, sorry Ethan. Not a problem! I even put the link to Amazon first on my Book page. But so many people have asked me how to get a signed copy, I figured it was worth selling it direct too. I wish I could get the same discount from my publisher as Amazon gets, but I'd have to buy thousands of copies and that's just not practical. Also, last year I made a new high-res version of my cello video that looks and sounds much better than the old low-res version that has all those hits: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ve4cBOnSU9Q Thanks again to all of you. The only reasons I don't spend much time in this forum lately is I was writing my book for the past year rather than making music, and SONAR works so well I haven't needed to ask people here for advice! --Ethan
