I need some help with ISRC codes please!

Hey guys,
I am just about finished with a 10 song record for my band.  I have employed my pal Danny to master it & will be having disc masters duplicate it.  We will have it up on Itunes/amazon etc so as I understand I need to apply for ISRC codes for it.   I have gone to www.usisrc.org and started the process.  It says  there is a 1 time fee of $75.  Is this for each song?   I am a total Newbe when it comes to this so any advice is appreciated!?!?!?

ADK Built DAW, W7, Sonar Platinum, Studio One Pro,Yamaha HS8's & HS8S  Presonus Studio/Live 24.4.2, A few decent mic pre's,  lots of mics, 57's,58 betas, Sm7b, LD Condensors, Small condensors, Senn 421's,  DI's,  Sans Amp, A few guitar amps etc. Guitars : Gib. I can't remember but I think registration here in the UK was either free or certainly much cheaper than that.

Once you have your unique ID you allocate the rest of the code using your unique code in the way that is explained in the documentation. You can then register each song code in the database. There's a download app for that, but of course this is all relevant to the UK, I have no idea if it's the same or similar even across there.

Bummer, it's free here in Oz too! Obviously I haven't obtained codes in the US, but I would very VERY surprised if it was $75 per song...

I'll have three fingers of Glenlivet, with a little bit of pepper... and some cheese.

No Chuck, that fee is for life. Once you get your code, you keep it for life and just change the numbers and date each time. Let me give you an example so you see how it works brother.

When you pay $75, you get a specific "Chuck" code of 3 letters. Let's say those letters are XYZ. That's what you are paying 75 bucks for.

Now, when I master your album, there are other numbers that go with the code and I'll explain them.

The first part of the code is your country. So that will be US. The next part is your unique Chuck code which in this example is XYZ. The next number stands for the date it was released which would be 12 and the next series of numbers 00000 which stand for how many songs you can put out per year using the code. So let's break it down even further.

On song one of your master, it would read this: USXYZ1200001. The next song would read USXYZ1200002 and so on.

Now, if you do another album this year...since you will be doing 10 songs with me, the last song I code for you will read USXYZ1200010. Any songs you do after that THIS year, you would start with that code followed by an 11 instead of the 10 in the last two digits.

Once 2013 gets here, the coding starts over again. So, once the date changes, you start the code over and any song you do would NOW be USXYZ1300001, understand? The $75 is only for the XYZ code and once you pay for it, it's yours for life. Hope this helps. Hey bro, next time you have questions about this, just ask me since I'm the guy that will be doing all this stuff for you. LOL! I don't mind and it's never a bother...remember, we may be working together but I'm still your friend and would always help you to the best of my ability with this stuff. :)

P.S. the codes used to be free here too. I didn't have to pay for mine....I just registered it years ago. The fee thing started about 2-3 years ago here in the US if I'm not mistaken. Maybe 5 years ago...I can't really remember.

In general (for anyone else interested) one other reason to get a ISRC is when an artist/band is signed with a label which is usually arranged by them otherwise a distributor such as; Tunecore will supply a code for free and it works exactly the same and of course accepted internationally.

Hey Chuck, let us know when the album is released and in stores as I will buy a CD and help spread the news. Good to know that the band is out there performing as this is an important factor that helps generate sales... wish you guys great success!
