One more External Insert question

Is it possible, in 8.5.3, to put an external insert on one channel, be it track or buss, and send to only the left of the output, and put another external insert on another channel and send it to just the right channel of that same output? When I send to just the left channel of an output via an external insert, that stereo output is no longer selectable on another channel's external insert. I'm being forced to use external inserts as stereo subgroup inserts, which is cool, but I'd like to be able to do individual inserts as well.
Is this possible in any version of Sonar?

Thanks in advance for help with this.

No one, huh. I suspected that there was no way to do it.
If you use EI's, what is your work flow/how do you implement them?
Does anyone know if another program will allow completely independent assignation of each channel of AES outputs?

Far as I can see this all depends on the configuration of your interface. In other words if you only have a simple 2 output interface how are you going to monitor your mix if you've assigned them as inserts.

The set up's I'm familiar with use 8-16-24-32 outputs into a mixing desk were analog gear can be patched in via sends and inserts. This can then be either be returned to the DAW and re- recorded  as indavidual tracks or mixed down to a final stereo mix.

There are also interfaces that have multi in outs that you can configure as send/returns, I guess the minimum would be having 4 outputs. The better ones have this in the GUI mixer/ control panel.

I'm running an RME HDSPe, which has eight AES inputs and outputs (so 16 channels in and out). The first AES line is my main outs. I'd like to use the other channels on an individual basis, i.e. be able to assign AES 2 Left out and AES 2 Left in to a channel via external insert, and the right channel of AES 2 in and out to a different channel. Sonar doesn't seem to allow it. When I assign either channel of the stereo AES line, the other channel is no longer accessible on other external inserts.
Sorry if that's not clear enough, but any help would be amazing.
