can I just plug a second hard drive on the data cable?

HI.. I have WinXP on my DAW and I want to keep it that way. It works good enough. The worst problem I have recording with it is my quality as a musician.
However... my hard drive has many gigs of photos and videos and music files that I would like to store on a different drive than I use for recording. Actually I really want to strip this working recording drive down to bare essentials for recording only. But I want the  other stuff as accessible as if it was still on the drive.
So can i just plug another hard drive onto the cable and use it like external storage?  Also it would be best if that drive was totally asleep or just not powered up at all unless I click on it.  Is that going to work if I go into power mode and tweak the settings?

thanks for any input. I'm sure a lot of you guys have setups you can describe.

I want to stick with XP on this one because of my Aardvark Q10 which I really like.
Everything works fine.
thanks
paul

If you have IDE hard drives, then what you describe is possible, except for, I think, the idea of the hard drive going to sleep when not in use. If you have SATA ports on your computer, you can add another SATA hard drive and plug it directly into the motherboard, rather than on the same IDE cable. Have you considered an external USB 2.0 hard drive for storing photos, video, and music files?

As long on IDE channels one is the Master Drive and the other is got the little pin connection to make it the Slave Drive. About the same with any such set up. Usually you have two channels - 14, 15, and 4 drives possible including any DVD drives or CD drives. One has to be the Master (you usually boot from it) and the other the Slave (does not boot) but Boot Drive Conditions are usually in the BIOS of the machine and also the CD or DVD can be a boot drive but not the first one you usually boot the machine to start it from - usually that is a HardDisk Drive. You use the CD boot drive when the harddisk fails to start up the machine then if possible with start-up CD's or manufacturer's CD's except not everything has changed and they also changed some of that and to me probably messed it up referring to having to download off the Internet now or something - but perhaps someone else knows about all of that depending on what OS is running nowadays.

What i would do (and have done in the past) is connect up an external Hd drive. Format it and away you go. You should be able to get it up and running in about 10 to 15 minutes.
then just copy all the files you want to that external.
Clean and defrag the drives and your set.
You can then turn the external HD on /off as you see fit
    No fuss, No muss

make sure you get at least a 1 Terra Bite HD.....they are fairly inexpensive and the extra space is well worth it.

    just my 2 cents

    P.S.
I have 4 external HD's connected to 2 computers and never have had an issue with either one....

thanks for the replies...  I did try external, but I got a  cheap one that crashes my XP lately, and I had another one where the external quit, but I took it apart and the internal drive that was inside worked fine as an internal hard drive, but the case that made it external was bad.  I have EZ gig and that works ok for somethings, but it is such a wobbly connector to the hard drive I'm afraid if using it much. It was great for cloning, but their new upgrade has been giving me the Blue screen. BSOD>  I was hoping I could just have an extra hard drive that would be only on if I want to get into it myself. I am getting paranoid of hackers.  I had a tech support guy come onto my computer from India or someplace mousing around on my desktop and then offering to clean the viruses off of my computer for  140 bucks and he was going to wait until I got my credit card.  That was nice of him.
Well I declined, there's always some junk on a computer. I have a pretty good lineup of programs to scan for stuff. But I want an absolutely dormant drive for my passwords, account numbers, and everything I don't want published to hackers.   That tech support guy came through a link on my McAfee software, and he asked permission to through LOGMEIN, but I think they can come back without permission if they feel like it, and just hack away firewall and all.
I'm going to post this as  a new post. Just want to hear the discussions on hacking.. what's paranoia and what are the real threats.
    thanks again.
