Creating cd: all wavs in a seperate master project and then what...?

I've been reading about preparing songs for a cd and one of the tips says it's a good idea to create a master project in which you put ALL songs, each on a seperate track, and then send them to master bus in which you will have your mastering plugins (Ozone in this example).

There are two things I don't understand:

1. Each song probably needs different mastering settings. Imagine I was to use Ozone on the master bus: how can I let Ozone do something different on each track...? Shouldn't I be using Ozone on each track seperately...?

2. I read a few posts saying that you can also use this setup to take care of the best gaps between songs, how to face out or belnd into each other, etc. But... does that mean that in the end you would export the entire project as one giant wav...? And if that is so, how do you burn it on cd with the possibility to skip songs to the very beginning of the next one...? Up to now I simply exported wavs and burned them using Toast on a Mac as an audio cd...

The last question could also be: how do you burn your master cd for duplication?

Sonar 8.5 PE, Edirol FA-66, Behringer C-1. All instruments in my songs are VSTi's.

    2. You re-import your giant wav into something like Sony's CD Architect from where you can define where each song starts and do a lot of other cool stuff as well.

CDA is probably my 2nd best purchase after Sonar.

Im not an expert but this is what I have been doing unitl I figure out the correct way to do it Hello.

    1. Export a Mix of the Project songs individually

    2. Drag them Back in and Master that Track as an individual song Project and then Export it with Master in the title so I know which one Im looking at and that it is finished.

    3. I then drag the Masterered Songs individually into iTunes or Windows Media Player on there own playlist. (This achieves what you are looking to do)

I try to do everything within X1 cause I dont want to get stuck buying and trying other software without knowing what Im doing with what I have yet (LOL)-but I am just a hobbiest and listen and am thankful for the inputs and help we get here from others which is more VALUABLE than some realize. So depending what you are looking for , to do or spend, listen to everyone and get what you need out of it.  Best of luck!!!

I prefer to master in-place, meaning Ozone and all the other mastering stuff goes on the master bus of each individual project. The exported file is then immediately ready for MP3 encoding, and because I maintain level and EQ consistency from project to project, they naturally fall into line in a CD project with at most a 1db tweak.

Then I import my individual (mastered) files, which at this stage are still 32-bit data because I don't do wordlength reduction or dithering in song projects. (No SRC, either, but that's a given since I work exclusively at 44.1)

The mastering project has a single instance of Ozone on the master bus, preceded by an LP-64 EQ. The EQ rolls off any leftover subsonics, nothing else. Ozone takes care of the wordlength reduction and dither, plus serves as a last-chance brickwall limiter to make sure there are no overs.

I like to adjust the gaps between songs myself, sometimes foregoing the gap altogether and crossfading between them. So it makes sense to import all songs onto a single track. Consequently, my standard CD master project is very simple: one audio track, one bus and two plugins.

Once the whole thing has been exported (remember to set the export options to 16 bits, no dither), you'll have one huge file. Your CD-burning software takes care of the index markers that delineate each song on the disk. Be sure to set the gap to zero in the burning application so it doesn't insert any silence of its own.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

I like your way of doing it Dave. Thats a little beyond me at this point in my learning curve LOL. Ive looked at Sony and Ozone ranging anywhere from $85 to $800. Which ones are good at doing this and not breaking the bank? Does X1 have anything similar in it that does the same thing?

Wordlength reduction. er... say again? I will Google for those.

But er... what CD-burning software are you using because my software sees one file as one song, period. I wouldn't know how to tell it where to start a song...
