I think there's been a very healthy discussion cycle going on with the release of the new leveling amp.
So I thought I'd throw this out for everyone to consider ...
MID/Side processing. I happen to be a big fan of it. I actually keep an M/S plugin on my Master Bus default setup always (bx_control2 if you must know).
I won't say it applies to everything under the sun (though it might lol), but it does make a difference if you manage the lower frequencies in a mix.
Try it. Experiment (as we should always do). Oh and it works nice with the leveling amp lol.
Have fun.
I haven't experimented much with M/S processing at all other than to simply test it but last night it came in very handy mixing down some tracks in a metal bands project that was sent to me. The performances were good but there was a lot of bleed in the drum tracks especially. I used the Channel Tools plugin to carve some space out in the middle in several of the submixes and it worked very nice. Let the bass, Kick and snare peek out as needed.
Thanks for mentioning this technique otherwise it might not have been on my mind at this time.
Dave,
You might want to try out the bx_control plugin. What I like is the ability to dial in the frequency range upon which the processing takes place.
I tend to keep it around the 340 to 500Hz range, with 450 as my 'default', but as has been said often (here in this thread and in general) even minor adjustments can make big differences.
Channel Tools does not have this frequency adjustment, and it'd be nice if it did.
