Taylor,Martin or Gibson

OMG Ive played and played them till my fingers bled and made the sales guys annoyed at me cause they are like used car sales men. I have to be comfortable with the git-fiddle Ima holdin, its just gotta feel and have that tone right for me to enjoy picking it up and gettin into my own little world and groove. Apparently these people just dont understand the need to bond with a geetar before buying it.

Don't be pressured Mike! Forget the brand and listen and feel. That'll tell which one. I did the same thing looking for a Tele. I found the ONE! Now it's mine

I have a taste for the Martin small bodies. The OM21 seems like a great blend of good.

I tried every Songwriter and didnt like the feel for some reason. The Martin D1 & 15 didnt seem to bad but the neck felt a little to skinny for my fat arthritic fingers (LOL). The Taylors I hurt my head over-Anyone of them below the 414/416 didnt feel right-to skinny on the neck, to light on the tones. The 414 and up seemed to project alot lowder and beeter tone to my liking. Cant wait to get back in there and narrow it down a little farther-not to mention get on their nerves a little more

I'm a dyed in the wool Taylor fan.  I've had Martins and Gibsons (and others) throughout the years but after getting my first Taylor eight years ago that was all she wrote for me.  But really it doesn't matter what brand it is.  Do YOU like it?  How it plays.  How it sounds.  Does it fit YOU like a glove?  Good hunting.

Rule #1 - Regardless of whatever they say, the salesmen are NOT there for your benefit.  Annoying them AND finding the right guitar is like a bonus.

Fixed

If you're fortunate enough to go to their factory, you can play every model they currently make. As much as I love the sound of Martins, they only have one neck style that doesn't cause me great pain followed by numbness in my hand.

They have (or had, may be more now), three neck styles. The Modified Oval was the one that fit my bear claws without causing any pain if I remember correctly. The DC-28E sounded incredible, plus it had electronics with built in modeling so you could mix live and modeled sounds. Had a bridge pickup and soundhole pickup. They don't make any more but there are still plenty of new ones out there.

Martin (and I assume others) also offer varying neck widths, which can sometimes make an even greater difference than the thickness or profile.

A 1 3/4" feels much bigger (and is much better for finger style) than a 1 11/16" nut width.

In order, then, to discover the limit of deepest tones, it is necessary not only to produce very violent agitations in the air but to give these the form of simple pendular vibrations. - Hermann von Helmholtz, predicting the role of the electric bassist in 1877.

I have  Taylor, Gibson, Fender and Alvarez..... they are all good.

Guitars are like women...... they will all pretty much do fine for certain things, but for that long term relationship..... choose carefully.

I think you need another login for whenever you want to post helpful information Ed.  Posts like the above from you are completely unexpected and knock us off our tracks you know.  Please consider the idea and think of the children!  (Not sure what that's actually suppose to mean unless your Mr. King from that other fred...)

Here's a link to Martin's page describing available neck widths and shapes.

Has anyone noticed that Mooch is looking like a Gibson lately?

I was torn between a Taylor and a Martin a few years ago. I ended up with an Ibanez Artwood that I had tried.
