This is due to my ignorance of the device but wonder if its really needed.

Hi John,

Can you get by without a Pultec style EQ?  Absolutely...
But the Pultec has several strengths which makes it a great choice for specific tasks.
It has a very "sweet" (not harsh) sounding high end.  Particular good when boosting highs (air for vocals, shimmer for cymbals)
It has a nice "beefy" low end... great for fattening kick/etc.
The selectable mid frequencies are great for adding articulation to: the snap of kick, the crack of snare, the mid articulation in vocals, etc.
The Pultec is a simple design that works well in many circumstances... (also easy to use)

Jim, you're spot on! The Pultec VST I use does tend to sound "sweeter" than the Cakewalk Quad EQ.  I also think it's better at "sculpting" a sound versus surgical EQ (e.g. I like using it on a guitar track).  Finally, the fact that the low end section can boost and attenuate at the same time allows for the "low end trick" on the kick.

Peace!
Daniel

This is a great idea but would need to be on par with the UAD. I don't mind a few flavors of LA2A because each one has shown usefulness on different parts of the frequency range. With the Pultec it needs to nail the feature set and sonics or it just becomes another EQ in the arsenal and overtime, I tend to only reach for the best sounding one.

Another place where you see the Pultec is on the two buss for final mix down by the way. Also the famous acoustic sound of Suite to Judy Blue eyes is a high end cranked on the upper end of the Pultec going into an LA2A. Love that sound.

Gear: A bunch of stuff.

Sounds, amazing, thanks for the precise info from Jim Roseberry,it sounds like something that would[obviously now] be a more than an excellent addition to the PC

Look we still havent got the point, our DAW's are near perfect, so what's next emulate studio's and equipment.

For those asking about why the pultec , it has a warmth that stands out in the low mids and you boost the **** out of the top end without the harshness as long it's emualted properl

The next DAW's will not be Sonar but Abbey Road, or Trident, hmm this is the future imagine buying a an Abbey Road DAW.

Maybe if they enlist a 3rd party developer for the task. Other than that, I'd rather Cakewalk focus their attention on making improvements under the hood of X1.

I reckon that idea, could certainly take off,a DAW as an Emulation of a famous studio, and obviously studio's,with Emulations of the HW set up of Famous recordings by certain individuals,and/or, they're individual setups in an array of famous/High End Studios.

This will happen....should'ave patent-ed "it",but patenting ideas, whats involved with that?

Definitely the future Beneb!
