Windows Updates
So, what's the deal with these little beauties? I know many people on the forum totally disable any sort of automatic updating. What's the reason for this? - not wanting to disturb an otherwise working setup?
- not wanting to interrupt the flow of a session
- any other reason?
I connected my machine to the internet last night in order to activate a couple of plugs, and before I could stop it, windows had downloaded and started to install 50 "important" updates I'm running Windows Security Essential so I'm not worried about viruses (and I don't visit those sites) So is there any inherent danger in keeping the system as up to date as Microsoft would like, or should I disable it from doing so in the future? Thanks.

I know many people on the forum totally disable any sort of automatic updating. It's the "Automatic" part that I don't like... I don't want my DAW managing/baby-sitting extraneous tasks... especially while I'm working with audio. Typically the updates won't cause a problem... but it could happen. Thus, I prefer to maintain an up-to-date backup image file (just in case)... and then manually apply updates.

Im thinking the same way Jim. I dont want my computer doing anything without me knowing it. I dont want anything running in the background/or unseen so if I have an issue recording, I know exactly where to start without the possibility of something software related outside of X1 causing problems like auto updates, power management, etc... Just been a good practice for me to follow If something does happen, its either the basic OS or the FTU. Running everything through the mixer or directly to the interface is self explanatory and provides a good visual of signals/inputs so you can easily spot any probs on that side.

Just because I have Microsoft's OS does not mean they control it. And anyway, with a lot of updates you are suppose to restart your computer after the installation. I do the updates when I want to, and they usually only come out with the virus updates on the second Tuesday of every month with Malicious Software Removal program.

I tend to do all of the Microsoft "critical" updates - but like everyone else here, I pick when I want to do them and have an image to fall back on if something goes wrong. For the record, I honestly don't remember the last time something went wrong, but I have heard horror stories.
Don't fix it in the mix ... Fix it in the take! The only updater running on all of my computers is the AV program. And scheduled scan is disabled. Real time is active, mostly. Windows updates: I always do this manually. a few at a time. And hardware updates are installed one at a time. Also: I do not want the defrag program starting early wed morning when I am doing something. And I'd rather use Auslogics defragger. Lots of updaters are started from the task scheduler. Google updaters are nearly impossible to stop. Adobe reader, quicktime, and real player reset the auto-start/updater when updated. As does java. So need to review after every time to disable the stupid.

I have had client's machines not staret after updating the previous night. (Before they were my clients) And I have had experience with updated video drivers from MS crash the machine. Hence my 1-at-a-time approach to hardware updates.

I'm still old fashioned and don't let my daws go anywhere near the internet. If there's any software that insists on an internet connection I don't buy it!

Then you are not even buying an OS anymore or any software, because they all have to have a Internet connection to activate the software anymore or register the software anymore. For updates because the software always needs updates and a patch also, because...............to me in my opinion...............that is the way they are doing it, because of piracy.
