Carry that weight a long time... Really?
In the process of moving, I'm preparing to once more get rid of stuff... Since I've been there and done that at least three times in last 12 years, there isn't much left. Up for sacrifice this time is the old reel to reel - which means saying farewell to all those old demos, reels full of them. Hours and hours of music. I can't imagine sitting through the process of transferring that to digital. Also have a few hard drives full of projects, finished, half finished, sketches, ideas... Unless I can get the PC to boot up one last time for me and transfer that to an external HD, all that stuff is history. And then a bunch of DVDs full of music - all Cakewalk projects, so nothing easily accessible in a near future anyway, unless I install W7 on my Mac. Meh... And binders full of lyrics and songs ideas, drawings, stories. I find myself wondering, would I ever have bothered listening to those things anyway? I had the reels sleeping on shelves for I don't know how long - I don't remember even putting one on the machine after I bought the first PC. I've lost/thrown away all cassettes w/ demos and live recordings. I have a handful of pics if I want to feel nostalgic. But I don't really. Essentially, the best of what I've written is in my head. I think there was some pretty decent material in there, but, for some reason, I don't see the necessity of "pillaging" my own archives for ideas. Do you guys really go back and listen to that stuff you did 15-20 years ago, or do you just pile up stuff like I do, only to have someone taking care of disposing of all that junk the day you buy the farm? It reminds me of an ex girlfriend who kept piling up things "in case she could use it someday"... I'm in a place in my life where it seems that growing older is learning to slowly let go of things - memories, dreams, ambitions, reliable joints... I don't mean in a sad and pathetic way - there's a form of serenity in slowly fading out. We don't take any of that stuff w/ us anyway. Is this what it's like to soon turn 40? Will I look back and think "how dumb!" when I reach 50?

I absolutely go back and listen to stuff I did a long time ago. I still find gems of ideas that I either wasn't mature enough or technically adept enough at to finish then, and can finish now.

I digitized 20 or so ADAT tapes. I have the transfers in SONAR projects. I have not opened them (the SONAR Projects) in over four years. I still have the ADAT tapes. Can't bring myself to erase them or throw them out. They are my "legacy". Oh yeah, I still have all my DAT tapes (masters) of those projects and some projects I did on the Porta-One. I still have the PO and all of it's tracking cassettes too.

"Things" you can always buy again, but one-of-a-kind, or personal stuff should be saved SOMEHOW. 'Cause, once it's gone, it's gone for good!

I would spend the time transferring everything to digital, otherwise, I suspect you might regret it later. I dearly wish I had been more careful with many of my early projects. Their loss, either through a bad decision to toss them, or carelessness, has come back to haunt me years later. And besides, it is sometimes very cool to revisit stuff I did way back when. It often surprises me (in a good way).

I guess I'll follow your advice. Not sure I'll transfer the stuff right away but I'll spare it and have it stored over at the in-laws place.

I'm still carting around a 40lb tape recorder that I bought in 1979. It's in mint condition with original packaging and service manuals. I just can't get rid of it, but I only use it as an intermediate step in recording. I can't find 1/4" tape but can't put such a fine piece of gear in the trash. It represents an era of technology that won't return. I've never created enough music to worry about old bits, just lots of gear that I wish I could get back.

Classic old gear is something you will regret dumping. The old work tapes and books too. But reality sometimes dictates that one must clean the closet every now and then.

If you don't keep the old tunes, ideas and sheet music how's anyone going to release a box-set after you're gone?

Ha! Another shameless plug. I gave ia quick listen to a few tunes. They sound great. I particularly like Air Race, so far. It sounds a little Tull-ish.
