OT: Mellotron sample library ?

Greetings from Denver.

I'm working on a new project that would really benefit from some Mellotron sounds.  Think early King Crimson.

Anyone have or know of such a library?  I can deal with samples in just about any format, and cost isn't really an object if the library is well-done and fairly complete.

IKM Sampletron sounds like crap - just like a real Mellotron. And if that ain't lo-fi enough for your "In the Court of the Crimson King" cover, it also includes the Chamberlin, Orchestron, Novatron and Optigan in all their glorious cheese. I love 'em, even if I've never actually found a use for them.

These ones sound as bad as the real thing, basically because they are.

    Free too.

There also used to be an old Mike Pinder sample CD I don't know if that's still available anywhere he was one of the original team behind it and had a pretty complete archive.

Dimension Pro has Tron Strings in the Electro Mechanical Folder under Digital Sound Factory Classic Keys. Not great, but free. The sounds even stop after 8 seconds just like the real thing.

The best I've heard is from the Abbey Road Keyboards collection, though that requires Reason. If you're a Reason user, I'd highly recommend it. It sounds way less flat than the IK or Kontakt. Can't speak to M-Tron as I've never heard it.

Yeh, and I've got a bunch of them. Lots of Kontakt libraries that are fun standalone but just don't fit into mixes. Most recently, it's been Omnisphere that I'm desperately trying to justify the 500 bucks for.

OTOH, there's the unassuming SampleTank that I expected so little from and turned out to be quite utilitarian. That sort of turnaround is what gives me the courage to keep trying stuff.

I reach for SampleTank quite often, in many ways it could be called one of my true go to libraries as I have XL and with the various group buys that have occurred over the years I have most of the libraries that utilize the SampleTank engine and the vast array of additional sound libraries made for them, and like you, my expectations were never that high when I first bought SampleTank back in 2007.

I do like the cheesy sound of IK's SampleTron.  Back in the early 70's we had a white mellotron (and MiniMoog of course) and oh what fun we had.  I truly wish I could use SampleTank's vast array of libraries more than I do; they have a lot to offer.  But having been around in the 60's and 70's means that with the love for vintage sounds, comes the curse of aging eyes, and quite frankly the problem with SampleTank is not their aging/vintage library but their aweful, horrible, unfriendly GUI.  If and when ST3 ever makes it to market and if it has a more readable (scale-able) GUI, I honestly look forward to using much more of the IK SampleTank/Moog/Tron/Miraslav etc...libraries that have been hidden from my vintage eyes for way too long.

My eyes are of a comparable vintage. The Windows magnifier tool, which I can invoke from a side mouse button, has allowed me to decipher the labels and memorize their locations.

It also helps if you take the color out of the UI and set it to a white background.

For a while I was using Miroslav's UI to run SampleTank libraries. Miroslav splits the 16 channels into two banks, allowing for a slightly more legible display. Over time, though, I switched to the SampleTank UI, which I now use for Miroslav as well.

I too have used the window's magnifier tool but for some reason I "forget" that it is there--a vintage memory issue I suspect; no not really, I find the magnifier a pain to control and get out of, but it is a tool I should use more than I have been.  How do you load it with your mouse button?    [[on edit:  I just pinned it to taskbar--thanks for recommending this as I really need this tool big time.]]

I also moved all the IK libraries so they all show up under SampleTank and also use the white background, and yes, this does make it a little better  [[BTW--I learned this from you ages ago or was that last year.]]  I really do like a lot in the IK libraries and find that they have many usable patches; yet, even with the white SampleTank GUI, I still strain too much and thus turn to Kontakt's slightly larger gui and its libraries instead.

While I wait for the new and improved SampleTank 3 GUI (which supposedly will still read 2.5 libraries) I think I will dig up ye ole magnifer tool.  Thanks for the reminder.

Back on topic... IK's SampleTron will be a library I look forward to getting familiar with again.  And this thread helped me realize what I had missed or forgotten.

I have the original M-Tron, VSTI they have updated it since then.  It's been out since 2000.

When Rick Wakeman said it was the closest thing to the real thing you know who to believe, he recorded some of the original samples for the Mellotron.  Check out youtube you will see him demonstrate it.  He uses the MTron on tour not real thing.

He even tried to better it with the BioTron: lets just say the BioTron did not take off.

The Mellotron was the successor to the chamberlin, invented in 1949 and you will get some of those samples with the MTron.  Just punch in GMedia.

I brought the original MTron in 2000: this track has some of the strings http://soundcloud.com/aaudiomystiks/dontmeanmaybe

    More questions ask.

Oh the GMedia version is the offical version with the Mellotron company endorsing it.

Go for MTron Pro by GMedia

I'm a MTron user since the first version MTron, bought all Libraries since then.
Currently, the streetly tapes and chambertron samples by Gmedia are very fine too!

    Hint:
Meanwhile Gmedia have created a 64 Bit beta version of MTron Pro.
You can get it via writing an email to Chris Macleod (on their website)

The 64 Bit Version works without a problem in Sonar and Cubase.
Only the installation process is in a beta status, but it works for me (Chris describe it well).

This is a helpful tip for any SampleTank user - why it's so small is one thing, but as too why they chose that awful Red background with Black text is just beyond sensibility.  I've gone trough several choices of colors for the background and settled on White long ago.
