Working the knobs

On knobs that don't allow typing in a specific value, I have trouble dialing to an exact value. Like the Gain knobs, or the faders on session drummer 3, or the knobs in the step sequencer. I do use my mouse wheel to move through the values, but I can't always get the number I want. Any advise other than don't sweat the small stuff ?
