My turn to vent.

So I've only seen my wife 8 days in the last 2 months. They are closing her office and she's losing her job soon and has been interviewing with several other places in the Des Moines area which is the only reason she returned home those few times. She had a friend from college call her, meet her for lunch, asked her to interview at the company he worked for because they were hiring soon, and set up an interview. Denied. Got the letter in the mail today. Never heard back from the other places. She's got 2 masters, 14 years of experience, licensed, and she gets a letter saying how impressed they were with her but were not hiring at this time ... AFTER THEY contacted her and asked her to interview.

The same thing sort of happened to me a few months back. I got a job offer to work on ATM machines at Wells Fargo through a 3rd party repair company. The guy told me the job was mine, we negotiated salary, he said I'd get the contract in the mail from his HR department ... never heard another word. I called him, cell phone was shut off. Looked online for the number to their HR department, called them, no response. Got a call a month later from another guy at the same company saying my resume just came across his desk and he was interested in me. I told him the job was already offered to me and he got pissy with me. He said the guy I talked to was let go because of district resizing. So, I'm guessing my paperwork never left his desk, nobody new about the job offer to me, and this guy got my resume from his HR people. The guy was a real ass. He would ask me a question, I'd answer, then there would be a long pause on the phone and he'd say, "Sorry, I was reading email, what did you say?"

I did a phone interview with a guy in Kansas City. He said I'd be a great fit and set up a time for me to meet with the local manager. I go in the guys office and the first thing he says to me is, "I can tell you're over qualified for this job by the way you have your beard trimmed." It was a driving job for Union Pacific RR, so yeah, I guess if I didn't look like a scumbag from the back roads of Iowa, I wouldn't fit in. So, I wrote them off. This was 6 months ago. LAST WEEK ... I get a call from the guy I interviewed with in KC and he asked me to call him as soon as possible. I call him, no response. Call him again no response. Call him again no response. Call him again no response. Call him again no response. Call him again, no response. Called him the final freaking time today. I doubt I'll get a response.

Honestly guys, WTF?

My current job is talking layoffs already. The trainer I was riding with had to take a few days off because his wife was having surgery, so they made me take the same days off he did ... without pay. They've been making techs take days off because work has been so slow. Yet here I am still in training. My boss doesn't even know my name. No uniforms yet, no cell, no laptop, no van, no login to view my paystubs.

Is it me? Am I a walking disaster area? Would my wife be better off without me? Honestly, I can't figure it out anymore.

I'm just disgusted right now thinking about all of this. The only thing saving us in the event we both end up jobless is, we lived tighter than Scrooge pre-ghostly visit so we have a few bucks saved, but hardly enough to retire on. Ha ha.

No need to reply. Just needed to get crap off my chest before I go insane. Looking at all the nice guitars today was good for me (See my need guitar advice thread). Took my mind off things for a bit.

On a side note, we went to the inlaws this afternoon and they made some awesome ribs. Ate too much, but then again, I never eat too little.

I got the Mega Ball tonight. Good thing I got that Megaplier. $6 whole bucks ... I suppose I'll give it back to them next week in hopes I hit something sooner or later.

P.S., I swear none of this is made up. You can't make stuff like this up.

    Bub,

I have heard a few horror stories about job searches.  You are not alone, but you and your wife certainly have had more than your share of bad luck and inconsiderate screw-ups for interviewers.   Companies know that there are more candidates than jobs--I don't know if it's intentional, laziness, work load or just luck of the draw.

Best of luck to both of you,
    Jan

Should auld acquaintance be forgot--hey, who the hell are you guys?

If other companies are like mine, it's the flow of cash right now. Some months, things are good, the VP says hire. One bad fall out of business, the owners freak out and everything is on hold. It can change by the week. Also, a lot of companies are culling the older generation so if you show up with grey hair, they are less reluctant to hire. Sad commentary but our children are taking charge and that is a fact of life. It can also be that qualifications get you the interview but "Mr. Smiles and Happy" gets the job. That's the way the younger generation hires these days if you find yourself in the room with a kid with no attention span and sitting in judgment. Force yourself to act interested.

Prayers are with you and your wife.

I don't think it is you at all or even close...I mean the beard comment would have probably had me writing THEM off. Sheer inconsideration by employers who know there is a glut in the market and have stopped treating people with any kind of respect.

I got a job one time with a similar outcome. After they hired me all of these little details came out. I was left under the impression that they were hiring because they had work- WRONG. They hired me and then sent me home for three days a week right away. What kind of a company offers full time work and does that?

Where I live I can't seem to find anyone to pay to work . They advertise a service, I call them for an estimate and they either never return my call or they lead me on and don't deliver. I mean, I have $$ to pay for some work and these guys are forgetting about me.

Thanks for all the well wishes everyone.

My boss emailed me tonight and asked me to come see him first thing in the morning. Won't get to sleep until 3am again tonight worrying about that.

@Starise: As for getting people to do things for you, I've run in to the same exact situation. I tried to get a chimney sweep to come out and clean my chimney and inspect my fireplace for 4 months. He finally showed up at my house one day and I happened to be home. He didn't do jack to inspect the fireplace and he was here and gone in 15 minutes ... $150.

Last summer we decided it was time to get our furnace and AC checked out since it had been a good 8 years or more since it was last looked at. Heard a spot on the radio for $79 and they clean and check both and if they find anything wrong, then they charge labor and parts. Fair enough. They gave a whole list of everything that needed to be checked, the guy came out, removed the cover on my furnace, rubbed his finger over something that looked like it was nothing, said it was good, asked if the AC was cold enough, handed me a bill for $79. He was supposed to check all kinds of stuff and never did. When I questioned him he said, "Aw yeah, you don't need to worry about any of that on this furnace. It will last forever."

    @Crg: I agree 100%.

My wife has pretty much went through all of her employment options here in Iowa. She's got an interview set up in Omaha NE and Charlotte NC next month. Looks like we're going to be forced to move along. At least someone is hiring somewhere doing what she does. Can't complain about that I suppose. :)

I'll jump in here, too.  Hang in there, Bub.  Times are tough now and some companies are very poorly managed.   I've had some friends out of work for lengthy stretches, too.  It sounds like you and your wife are making all the right moves and it may be that this is a season to move on down the road to something new.

You two are in my prayers as well.
