em bear assed to say

I have X1ex with all the goodies but don't use it.
So, yesterday, I bought the new thingamajig. Plugged it into a few things, yawned, and went back to 8.53.

what's wrong with me?

Why can't I see the light that someone says seems to shine so bright....?

Post this thread in the X1 forum someone will help you with the answer there I'm sure.

I've had plenty of good suggestions as to what might be wrong with me there.

For me, it's all the wasted space filled with colors and contrast that make it difficult for me to see.

The wasted display space is a constant reminder that the developers of X1 and I do not share the same priorities.

The inability to make some of the wasted space completely disapear form my view serves as a constant reminder to me that Cakewalk thought fashion over function was more important for the future.

    What a total turn off.

I've been trying other stuff and I keep coming back to 8.5.2 and you know what, it just works really really good and the feature set is just right... I've grown into 8.5, I know ALL the stinky work arounds and I find that I really don't need all the other DAWs that Mr. Anderton says I should buy to supplement X1.

I've been thinking about buying an X1 Studio license So I never have to look at the ProChannel redundancy strip again, but then I considered that every other aspect of the wasted space GUI design will be there to remind me that Cakewalk wasted all that display space on colors and contrast that I can not enjoy.

It is even more frustrating to think that after Cakewalk locked it all in, the representatives stated that it is not possible to change or modify the appearance when in fact anyone can hack open the file and replace the graphics.

The whole X1, take this or leave it episode makes me look forward to X2 and the possibility that it may be improved with a bit focus on function over fashion.

Or maybe I'll finally give up and use Cubase/Nuendo.

It only took 1000+ half price alpha testers to find out that the PC2A needed a patch rushed out to fix an oversight from last minute gui switch (re)placement decisions.

It may be a while before X2 is ready.

    best,
    mike

Well Mike, at least you are clear about what you don't like, and what you want. I don't know what I want. I've tried the demos for Studio 1 and Reaper with little success. SOnar in any of its versions just seems nicer to use. The are little features in the other products that I like but overall it seems to be a good product.

Interesting you find it  space waster. I find all of the popular DAWs have too much information in a small space and SOnars use of white text on a light grey background really grinds my grapenuts. WHen mixing or tweaking a track, I'd like to have everything for that one track on screen with easy access. I really dislike the fact that the Pro Channel and FX bin are not a single entity. They should have just expanded the FX bin and given you the option to pin your favourite plugs to it.

All too often I hear things and have to check all over the place to see what the control source is. eg. Is it a Pro Channel issue, effects bin, something in track view, etc. Top level things like meter settings are horribly implemented in my opinion, with changes being required in preferences, track view and console view.

There's plenty of room for improvement and I've submitted my feature requests. All things said, it's still the best for me.

    Regards, John

I don't really know what I don't like about X1 except for the envelope handling. I just can't (or don't want to) get passed that.  just too weird and convoluted.

But, I still bought the new compressor/amp thing. Which is like a big, SOoooo.. It's a friggin compressor of some sorts. But, like I said, I don't use X1. Why'd I buy it. That's $40, for what? I got yelled at for using this word before, but I have to say it, I',m stupid.....

I've said it before, and I'll say it again. It is a game. Cakewalk strips away much usability knowingly, claiming enhancements, and then eventually bring it back bit by bit and charge for it. IE: watch what happens with color customizations.

The main thing I don't like about X1 is that I can't afford a proper DAW to run it on (of course I feel the same about v8 too so I'm still stuck on the - very usable - v4 Producer).

    Someday.

Then I can spend all my "extra" money on plug-ins.
