Can no longer bounce to track after X1d upgrade
Hi all, My problem is this - I have a midi track (motif rack) external tone generator recorded a synth part and now I want to convert to audio. Before the X1d upgrade I could convert the midi track by selecting the recorded midi track and an audio track then select bounce to track. The midi track would then convert to a new audio track. When I do this now it acts like it is converting but I don't see the status bar and no new audio track with the conversion is present. If I use insert synth from the browser and select let say omnisphere and add a simple track with both midi and audio I can bounce that just fine with no problems. I also tried to go back to 8.5 and had the same problem. I have lots of projects with midi from my external tone generator that I have been able to convert to audio in the past. I have made no other changes to my system other than the X1d upgrade. I followed the directions on the upgrade (didn't have to roll back), verified the proper version (I have extended) and every thing seemed to be ok. I am stumped. Any body else see this? Please I need help. thanks in advance, mpop Life is Music

To bounce a MIDI track to audio using an external synth, you must record the external synths output in real time. A softsynth can be "bounced" using fast bounce but a real synth has to be played. It has always been like that and always will be. You must be mistaken if you think you've done that differently with external gear.

FastBikerBoy,
I HAVE bounced like stated above at least 100 times before. I record live midi using external device which does record a midi track. That midi track is then selected as well as a blank audio track. Then I can bounce to a new audio track with the converted to audio. It's not magic. I have taken a complete midi song, that I downloaded from the net that I did not play that was recorded in GM (General Midi) changed the GM midi to midi from Motif Rack (better quality), then bounced each track to audio. mpop Life is Music

Not sure how that happened prior - but what FBB told you is fact. You can't bounce an external like an internal. You have to play and record the external device.

Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Bounce to Track(s) to open the Bounce to Track(s) dialog box. 2. Under Mix Enables, clear the Fast Bounce check box and select the Live Input check box. If it is an external sound generator that is playing the MIDI track data, regardless of where you have recorded that MIDI from then you have to at some point record the audio from that device via it's audio out. You need to have it's outputs connected to your computer sound interface in some way. That is what you record and can also be referred to as a 'bounce'. I thought you were referring to using the command "bounce to track" to achieve that and if it's possible to do that I am unaware of it but it's certainly something I'll be investigating as 95% of my MIDI tracks are sound generated by external gear. My apologies once again, I'll leave it to others to help out as I didn't think it possible. EDIT: I see saintom has you covered.

If I remember correctly you can put the External Insert in the FX bin and just use the returns in the External Insert plug in. and this will also make it possible to Bounce external sound generators (synths), as long as fast bounce is unchecked. I think for the first way I posted, you have to arm the track for recording, but with the External inset plug in, you do not need to arm the audio track. HTH Tom

HTH Tom I've just looked at this again and I think I must be misunderstanding the question/point. If I have a MIDI track routed to an external synth and select it to "bounce to track" I get the "no audio to bounce" warning, exactly as I'd expect. If I add an audio track with inputs set to my external synth and select the MIDI and audio track, then select "bounce to track" I get asked which track I want to bounce the audio to, but that still isn't going to bounce (record) audio from the external synth. All that does is bounce the empty audio track to a new audio track. Again exactly as I'd expect. The live input option is AFAIK only present in the "Export" dialogue box. It is something I have used successfully but rarely use as I normally want to do some form of processing on the audio from the synth. I've either missed the point/question completely or stand by my earlier post where I said it isn't possible and AFAIK never has been or will be simply because of the need to record/play the external synth. The method as I understand the OP is asking (again AFAIK) will only work with softsynths.

FBB has it exactly right. I think the problem comes in with the word "bounce". The word bounce is not applicable to external hardware gear.

I don't have an external synth so I can't test this, But I just did a quick routing test to see if my thought would work as I remember they do. What I did was 1. set up a audio track 2 added the External insert plug in into the FX bin, set the return port picker of the EI Inputs 9 and 10(RME Fireface 800 ) 3 Set up my laptop audio out to my sound cards to Inputs 9 and 10(RME Fireface 800 ) 4 Selected "time" by scrubbing the timeline 5 Selected Bounce to tracks 6 In the bounce to track dialog, I change the destination to the track with the EI, Unchecked Fast bounce, selected Live Input. 7 Pressed OK 8 Sonar started rolling, I could hear what I was "bouncing" (no I was not using the RME to monitor my input signal, in fact I had my input on the audio track set to none) 9 When Sonar stopped "bouncing" my selection, I had a wavform, that played back what I had just bounced. with this theory of mine. My guess is one could Have a MIDI track that is driving an external synth, and a audio track set up like I did, but in the return port, make sure that it is set up to receive your signal from your external synth, and it will bounce your external synth to the audio track. Actually I know it will work as I used to do this when I did use external synths. HTH Tom

No worries, actually I just went back to try something else and found out that you don't have to check Live Input in the Bounce to track dialog. Just uncheck Fast bounce and the incoming audio will be printed during a bounce. Tom

A bounce to me is taking exiting audio and "mixing it down" to another track. It can be a single track or multiple tracks. To use the word bounce in recording the output from an external source to me is confusing and misses the idea of the word's meaning. Correct me on this if I have it wrong.

From the manual page 883 Bouncing tracks The Track view Tracks > Bounce to Track(s) command lets you combine one or more audio tracks into a submix. A submix can be a mono track, a stereo track or several mono tracks that contain the mixture of the original tracks, preserving the volume, pan, and effects for each track. If you’re bouncing tracks that are routed to a surround bus (SONAR Producer only), you can bounce them to as many mono tracks as you have surround channels, by choosing the Split Mono option in the Channel Format field of the Bounce to Tracks dialog, and also choosing a surround bus in the Source Category field. After their creation, the submix tracks are just like any other tracks—you can edit them, add effects, copy them to another project, etc. The original, unmixed audio tracks are not deleted, so you can archive them and recover them later, or continue using them as before. The Track view Tracks > Bounce to Track(s) command operates completely offline, meaning you can mix down tracks that may be too complex for your machine to actually play in real time. Here are some reasons to use Bounce to Track(s): • Your mix is so complex that real-time playback is impossible. Bounce to Track(s) produces the correct mix, and store the result in a new track or tracks. • You require more CPU time for your real-time effects. With Bounce to Track(s), you can premix some of your tracks with real-time effects applied, saving CPU time during playback. If you mix down to tracks that already have data, the new events are placed in the track, but do not overwrite existing material. To mix down (bounce) audio tracks 1. Set all volume, pan, effects, and automation settings just as you want them. 2. Select the tracks or clips you want to mix down. 3. If you are using effects on the tracks and want to mix the effects down at this time, select the whole length of the longest track or clip plus an extra measure for the reverb or effects “tail.” 4. Click the Track view Tracks menu and choose Bounce to Track(s) to open the Bounce to Track(s) dialog.

Thanks to all who have posted. After walking away and the help of a couple stiff drinks I returned to my project and tried your suggestions. I was able to convert midi to audio using Saintom method. All I can say is that I never had to do it this way in the past. But as long as I can still convert by what ever method is the important thing. All you Guys/Gals ROCK !!! Once again thank you. mpop Life is Music
