Writing Automation on a separate track?

 
Is it possible to write volume automation for an audio track on a new and separate track?  I'd like to keep the automations in their own folder if possible.

    You could send the audio track to a bus and write the automation to the bus if volume or pan is your game.

    don't think that's possible.. :/

    the closest thing you could do, i guess, is to send the track to a bus and and automate the bus-track instead.
    but then you'll have to have all plugins you want to automate there as well
