Baffled!

Hello everyone. Ive got an HP laptop with windows 7 and music creator le 5 with update installed. I cant even get started with this thing. It came with the USB to 1/4 inch jack (instrument), and when I plug it in, I get audio through my speakers that is not being routed through the program. There is also a gnarly delay. The tracks input choices are also NOT the type described in the help manual. Ive tried every available input option with every available usb port and nothing makes it right. Also, when there is sound recorded to the track through the computers mic, playback output is set to headphones, and there is no longer a choice for speakers. Its a cheap program, but I still expect it to kind of work. Please help!

    Welcome Axenic.... Axe for short?

MC5LE..... is a limited versioin of MC5 which is also a "smaller" program than say...Sonar X1.

However, it will work properly IF.... you have the right tools and set it up properly.

What exactly is the USB to 1/4 inch jack thing?

Many of the USB cord style interfaces are not really suitable for full scale recording and play back because they still rely on the computer soundcard for sound.

Ideally, you want something like a M-Audio USB interface (or similar) to do what you want done. It is a dedicated sound card, and it will show up in the audio & midi options to select inputs and outputs.

It is really important that you DO NOT select the factory sound card in a computer....especially in a laptop, since they are not designed to do the full duplex recording that MC5 is capable of.  There is nothing wrong with 5LE, it is simply that the hardware can not do the job...hence, you have, as you say Gnarly delay or latency in the playback and in sync recording mode.

A dedicated sound interface will solve that.

I used MC4 for over 3 years on a stock Dell lappy running the Vista OS, but I was using an external interface.

    Welcome to the forum.
I think you actually got the guitar/USB thing and it came with MC 5 LE, and it's not really the best choice for people who want to do serious recording, since it's a one-way sound card and you have to use the stock sound card in order to hear it. That means 2 different sound cards, 2 different clocks that can't be synchronized, resulting in tracks that are also never in synch. Plus, you have to use the MME driver mode, resulting in the massive delay you're hearing. MME is the slowest audio driver.
I can't say you got ripped off, because MC 5 LE may be worth the price itself if you can pair it with a decent audio interface.

check Beagles site since he has compiled a listing of interfaces that work well with Cake.
