Anyone ever had side chaining stop working on all plugs?

I've been using Sonar 8 for years, and used side chaining compression fine via the VC-64.  However, in the past I've occasionally lost the sidechaining ability - everything routes normally, but it has no audio effect.

I've got that again now (8.5.3 64 bit Win7 64 bit).  I've tried VC-64 and Sonitus compressor.  In both cases the normal sidechain routing option appears, I route the audio and do what I'd normally do.  It just does nothing audio-wise.  It was working in an earlier version of this project.  It seems very much like a bug to me... anyone else had this?

I also have the Waves C1, but there doesn't appear to be any way of routing a side chain input into that at all in Sonar (I guess cos of lack of VST 3).

    Found it!

I'd solo'd both the master bus and the kick buss (was using the kick as the sidechain), so all the audio was passing through normally.  However, when you solo a bus, it solos all the relevant channels... but for whatever reason it doesn't solo the associated sidechain sends.  Solution - stop soloing stuff to find the problem, and it goes away!
