v-vocal: what is the point of de-selecting/bypassing notes

The little keyboard in the bottom left of the v-vocal window has select, deselect, and bypass functions.
 
But what is supposed to happen?
 
I have tried a bunch of stuff and the sound does not seem to change.
 
Cannot find any explanation of these functions. And no vid of anybody using them.
