I thought the same until i actually tried it Alegria It doesn't create spikes and it doesn't effect latency at all. I don't even know its running. It doesn't get in the way of anything i do as far as surfing the net, recording, mixing and mastering. I like it better than AVG and NOD 32. Years ago, im sure it may of had its issues, just like many programs. But now, the damn thing runs like a ghost. Yuo dotn even know its there andi have it enabled for auot updating and auto scanning every day and i have every security feature enabled on it as well. Its running 100% Cj

Jind I've switched almost all my systems to the free, Microsoft Security Essentials package. I find it to be very non-intrusive, and seems not to be heavy on my system. I think Microsoft finally got the security suite right this time. I've been protected and it's very much a set and forget type program. As always, individual mileage may vary. Same here, Microsoft essentials has been a staple of my systems for a long time and no problems to report :)
My system thus far: AMD PHenom 2, 965 3.4 ghz True Quad-core processor w/8mb cache, 16GB Corsair Ram, Gigabyte GA-890FX A-UD5 MoBo, 500 Watt pwr supply, Audiophile 2496 card,

I wrote a blog post on this very subject. COMPUTERS IN THE STUDIO (PART 2 – GOING ONLINE) FWIW: I use MS Security Essentials with no problems. I find it important as much or more for connecting USB thumb drives as I do for going online.

+1, Someone comes to your studio with a thumb drive and you have no idea if that drive is infected. The person giving you the drive most likely doesn't even know its infected. Same gos for sharing files with someone over the internet. Cj

Didn't the Iranian centrifuges get destroyed by a thumb drive? One can never tell what is coming ones way.

MSSE +1 here. I've used nearly all of them at some point, AVG the most recently. MSSE is quick and easy and lite and already built-in, so it stays out of the way which is pretty important to me.

I tend to agree with Jim but also have another question.....am I naive in thinking that using an XP Virtual Machine to access the Internet is a safe way (assuming that I'm only visiting safe and reputable sites)? I realize that any file that is downloaded and transferred to a shared drive on my machine (shared with the Virtual Machine) could be infected but....... is this a relatively simple and effective method of avoiding the use of AV and any possible overhead that it may bring along with it? I'm led to believe that it is but I'm not sure.... Dave

brandon great article man. i think people are a litlle too freaked out about catching a virus.i know everyone has their own story and so dont i,but ive been running my daw with nothing but microsoft S.E. for about 6 months, even browsed here and there and never had a problem,i wouldnt go as far to start surfing aimlessly but i do frequent sites often looking for info and do my downloads, updates.but you see here is the thing,i have another computer i use for surfing i suggest anyone here to do the same, and dont tell me you cant pick up an old dell demention for 50 bucks somewhere on craigslist.those things are a dime a dozen and with one gig of ram you can easily fly around the web, watch you tube vids, exc, exc, exc. i did this untill i upgraded my back up computer to an acer t180 with 4 gig of ram,now i dont need to share my daw with nothing.but when i sut it off one night after windows updates.my younger son(who uses my acer sometimes) went in there and started playing popcap games on my daw..lol..from god knows what site.(this is the same kid who gets a virus every week from playing games, thats why he was on mine)so i paniced and downloaded malwarebytes..that program should be used by everyone.ive never had a virus i couldnt lick with malwarebytes.trogans, spyware, addware, you name it. so i run that now once every couple weeks and ive never had any issues.

+1 I've been using Norton Gamer Edition - very lean. BTW - I scan USB's on a separate machine before I plug into my studio machine.
