Including timecode information in the wav files that Sonar creates

I received some tracks from a friend who uses Cubase and in looking at the audio properties I noticed the wav files had timecode information in them. I was thinking that may be a way to have us easily sync files together and was wondering if Sonar has a way of including timecode in the wav file. This option appears to be included in the file spec. It looks like the properties that are listed for the Cubase file are using 'ID-Tag' properties of OrigTime and TimeReference. Not sure if this is a standard or just something they're using.

If anyone knows more about this and if Sonar has this capability please help me out.

Thanks,

John

This is your lucky day   That capability is an inherent part of Sonar, and easy to do.

When you export a clip, chose the "Broadcast WAV (time-stamped)" option. The timing will get embedded in the file. For example, if the clip starts at 2 minutes 12 seconds, when your bring it into a project that recognizes Broadcast WAV files, no matter where you drag it it will "snap" to 2:12 in that track.

Try it yourself - export a clip to the desktop, then bring it back into an empty track in Sonar. It will end up at the same time it had originally.

Do I have to export a clip to enable this functionality or can I have the wav files that Sonar creates contain this information automatically? Typically I just copy the wav files from the Audio folder to share with others which saves the step of exporting.

While you're working with audio inside Sonar you're free to move it around, so it doesn't have a "permanent" time-stamp. Exporting is what "embeds" the current start time data at the time of export. Once you bring a time-stamped file into Sonar, you can move it around, and if needed, revert to the original time stamp position after moving it.

What I do in this type of situation is bounce all clips within a track to create a single clip, and extend the start time to the beginning of the project. Then the person receiving the file knows to have it start at the beginning of the project. You do have to match tempos exactly, of course.

Yes, that's what I've been doing too, have all my audio start at the beginning of the project that I send to share with others and that's been working. Looks like I have the other option now too for sharing edits and clips. Thanks for your help, appreciate it ... john
