Recording with Studio Instruments

Hi all, I'm new to Cake Walk (I have MC 6 with Studio Instruments also installed).  I can't get SI to record "live" data. (For now, I'm just using the mouse on SI's instrument graphic.  Once I figure out how to make it work I'll move on to a midi controller.)   I insert the synth, arm the track, I can hear it, see it register on the record level indicator, but nothing records.  I can drag and drop preset patterns to the track no problems, but can't get a "live" performance to happen.  I'm sure I'm missing a setting somewhere.  Can someone help?  Thanks.

Get the controller now. That's the only way to record a live performance.
Using your mouse, you are just auditioning the notes. This triggers the sound, but does not record the critical MIDI data.
Using the mouse in the GUI lets you see pictures of the car.
The controller will let you drive it.

You need either a midi controller or one of the MIDI keyboard synths. They all output midi, either with the old 5 pin midi cable or many of the new ones are using USB to output the midi data.

You must use one of these to be able to do live recording.   Set up the soft synth track (studio instruments) and select the midi source to input into the track.... arm the midi track and hit record..... then play .

Thanks for the help.  I wish MC's documentation was a little better in explaining how things work - and what doesn't work.  Thanks again!

Technically, it's all there (for the most part) in the manual. However, the manual generally covers Sonar, and as such some things might not fit exactly..... and the manual is written by folks who know the program inside and out, and tend to write with that assumption ... that you do too.

Ask questions here, search the manual, and you will eventually get it worked out.

It is not necessary to know everything about MC in order to use it effectively. For example, I tend to use only the things that I need in order to record my music. There are many areas of MC that I have never needed and therefore have never bothered to look at to see what they do or how they do it.
Now days I only look them up when someone is asking a question about that process here.

Again, thanks for the info.  So let me throw another wrinkle at you....  I CAN get the included CW Sound Center instruments to record "live" with the mouse.  Since I insert it as a soft synth just like SI, what's the difference?

well, with a keyboard style controller you can get it to so much more.... things that would be impossible with a mouse.... like 6 note chords.

If you have any piano keyboard skills what so ever, a controller/keyboard is THE way to go.

Mouse is a last resort, and for simple edits to fix a wrong note or two that was play in with the controller.
