Lots of Dropouts

I've been using x1 since it came out.  just recently installed x1d.  I'm having more dropouts.  I'm lucky if I can make it through a song with no dropouts here lately.  Could that be a sign that my hard drive is about to bite the bullet?  I've had the same hard drive since I got X1 the week it came out.  I've wondered how long the drive would last with ongoiong recording, etc.  I'm recording at 48hz and 24 bit depth 512 buffer.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

There are many things that will cause dropouts. ASIO buffer size, I/O buffers. If you are using MIDI try increasing the prepare buffers. They default to 250 even though CW recommend 500. Preferences->MIDI->Playback & recording

Hard drive is unlikely to be an issue unless it's getting very fragmented. A hard drive failure is more likely to show itself as crashes.

You mean "bite the dust". You "bite the bullet" when you have to make a difficult decision.

Have you defragged the drive recently? When your song is playing, is the disk or CPU usage abnormally high.

What are your latency settings? Dropouts usually occur when the computer can't keep up. Maybe you have your latency set too low for the equipment.

I would also check to see what else is running in the background. You have plenty of horsepower in your computer, but if you have too many processes and apps running in the background it can cause problems. Check the Task Manager. How many processes do you have running?

You mention that you are having"more" dropouts. I take this to mean that you had dropouts before you installed X1d?

X1d could be a slightly more cpu intensive, however I have an older Q8300 chip and I have not noticed anything significant using X1d expanded on my machine,so I tend not to be quick to blame X1d in this case.

I guess a lot of things should be considered. If your hard drive is 5400 rpm then maybe this is a contributing factor, but usually not the main culprit in situations where you have dropouts.

Defragmenting a hard drive can make it retrieve data faster.5-7yrs is the average life expectancy of a HDD. I recently replaced my aging drive because it was getting old.

Background operations in Win7 commonly cause dropouts on computers not adjusted/tweaked for audio recording. Additional software, especially something like Norton will cause all kinds of dropouts.

If you push ctl+alt+delete and bring up task manager you can see what programs are using cpu resources. Maybe this can help you to see where the problem is. If using soft synths, try freezing the tracks. If recording audio with a lot of effects in your tracks try using the FX button located in your controls bar to turn off all effects and see if the system plays ok. It could be either too much on the cpu or one effect is robbing the cpu.

Looking elsewhere here in search will turn up either links to win7 tweaks or give you links to where they are. I don't have that info at hand or i would pass it along, but I know it is on this site.

I'm one of those who have had the same settings for two years. X1, 1A, 1B, 1C and now with 1D, now I can't make it all the way through a song anymore. I'll do a de-frag and see if that helps... I just did a complete reinstall of Windows 7 this last weekend. I figure with the hard drive and folders all being clean, this thing would scream. One of my earliest test was loading up a 16 track song with 2 and 3 vst's per track. Two instances of dimension pro. Zeta and playing it all back as I tweaked on it. The system never even had a hiccup. Now I'm crashing with 7 tracks and no Pro channel fx running and only a reverb bus and a delay bus. It's kind of freaking me out now.

What plug-ins are you using? Some of the freebies are crap and shouldn't be used.

2 or 3 VSTs per track is a bit much... Use busses where you need the same effect on multiple tracks.

I have Carbonite online backup and I have to pause that even when listening to projects because I will have a dropout.

Is this a standalone PC or do you use it for other things as well?  Sounds to me like something is happening in the background (Whether its an auto update, antivirus, WLAN card, or ???) but Ive noticed since installing Expanded that I can make a drop out occur by making the system think while the Transport is in action whether its playing, recording, etc...   I assume you have been through all the usual setups with disabling antivirus, WLAN card, Power Saving Modes, Sleep/StandBy disabled, etc...?  Try dropping back to 44.1/24 on your project.   Also How Full is your Hard Drive, I know once you start exceeding the 50% capacity, it kind of effects it as well?

all of my fx plugins are the ones that come with Producer. I've used them for 2 years without the headaches I'm having now. This is not a standalone but I halt all unnecessary services when working with music (a throwback to my days with a p4 / 32 bit systems). This has really become an X1D problem for me. I use two hard drives, one for OS and Programs and one for recording location.

You still should check the Task manager and see what else is running. Some things get installed and started without you knowing it.

Are you using ASIO mode? What's your buffer and latency settings?
