Is the LAME encoder really that bad?
Couldn't they have called it the REALLY GOOD AND STRONG encoder? They obviously didn't talk to the marketing people first.

Well, it works better than the Bapu encoder which converts everything into "Ja."

For a fun exercise, take one of your favorite songs, and do a spectral analysis on it. Then convert it to an mp3 file. Then repeat the spectral analysis. You'll see how much of the high frequency spectrum is cut by the algorithm...

I will admit to being very confused right now... doth the Strummfurd becometh mad under a fulleth moon during AEster? MP3s do a good enough job when you consider what they are... small size hi quality though "lossy" audio. There are other lossless formats, but they take twice the physical space, and codecs for them are not as ubiquitous. In time they will replace the MP3. LAME itself has been under some criticism for the quality of its encoding when compared to some commercial versions, but... you get what you pay for... LAME is free.

I can't speak to the others? But Sony Soundforge has a really nice .wav to mp3 encoder, that's what I've always used, and I know it is "one of the best?" It's not free? I know there are others out there that are free, or cheap? But hey? I'm just saying... I've never been dissapointed with SF.

doth the Strummfurd becometh mad under a fulleth moon during AEster? No Shad, in the non-stop laughter shack that is the Coffee House the Strumeister felt the urge to amuse us all with the idea that material used in the manufacture of the dresses featured in the delightful pictorial shared the same spelling as the aforementioned mp3 encoder. Personallly for just for the side-splitting mirth content I'd have gone this route... ...which would also have been completely lame at the same time... ...perhaps even llama lamer.
