Are "Nerd" and "Fibonacci" Compliments?
We didn't have a drummer at last nights First Friday arts festival so I turned over my amp to the stage and sat in at the drums. I'm not really a drummer, I never really learned how to do a turn around with gusto. Anyways, we had some nice long jams and we played a bunch of songs. I played really quiet to keep it friendly and settled into a jazzy back ground style. At the end one of the songs The song writer smiled and said "dude you are such a nerd"... I was like "whaaaaa?"... and he said "you know, like Fibonacci"... and I'm like "I'm not really a drummer"... and the the crowd said something to the effect that if I wasn't I was faking real good. I think it worked out. I like playing live. :-)

I guess if you counted off like : 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8.... yeah maybe. Maybe it was meant as a term of endearment....? The question is... will he hire you again?

I assume you know that 2 Cs are pronounced "CHa". Not really sure how that applies, but I wanted to point that out.

Experienced guitarists know not to turn their backs on their drummer after making comments like these. At least, they know better than to let him ask the keyboardist what that means.

Mike, I applaud you for jumping in no matter what. Here is a story about an opportunity that I missed from the 70's. I auditioned for Ray Charles a long time ago. He was leaving for a world tour and his manager was looking for a new drummer. I listened to all his albums and thought "I can do this!". I went down to his studio, setup, met the Raylets and others. Then I was given chord charts and instead of Ray's R&B hits, a full blown big band chart was put in front of me. Ray came out, stood 5 feet in front if me. Stopped the band twice while exlplained very kindly to me that I missed the first accents. Then a break was called and I packed up. What an experience. Rimshot

Auditions can be very humbling. I've known some great musicians who are utterly brilliant in their genre and yet go down in flames when they have to audition for someone else's band. Some of them are nerds, too.

Mike, if I'm not getting the name mixed up you'll find that Fibonacci was a genius of sorts. He wrote the first books on the mathematics of business. Do a search. Fibonacci sequence.

All I know about are the pine cone and the Nautilus shell. :-) This is a once a month gig we do and it is made up of kids of all ages. Most of us are willing to play what ever instrument to get a good vibe going. Some of us older folks like too encourage the less confident folks to step on and off the stage to showcase their stuff while we provide a impromptu rhythm section of sorts. I set up a back line of house amps and instruments and we keep it very casual. It's really cool to see that everyone is willing to hand over the instruments as the evening evolves so everyone gets a chance to play. The location is in an arts district and there are several other stages where actual acts play sets, sometimes nine other stages, so the crowd gets to stroll from place to place and have good time. :-)
