DAW 3.0?

The word is spreading across DAW forums about a new contender that has a mix of features that may shake up the DAW world. Its definitely not going to impress everyone, but it seems to have gotten some attention, quickly, nonetheless.  http://bitwig.com/bitwig_studio.php Opinions?

I am sure this was discussed before, it's done ex Ableton employees IIRC. If anything is going to tempt me away from Sonar, it won't be this.

For musicians "wanting a more natural way to create music". My composition process doesn't even involve a computer. Then again, what's more natural than Lego blocks?

    Exactly!

The way "I" much prefer to work is that all my compositions (including most of the lyrics) originate with just piano or guitar and voice long before I boot up the DAW (SONAR)

And I never use preset audio or midi loop libraries because I much prefer to roll my own.

So yeah I prefer to write songs from the heart and whilst this is a more natural way of composing often the translation from the heart to the DAW may go astray and this is where I need to take care not to let technology get in the way of that process.

What I do is record the lead vocal and use that as a 'Lead' (guide-track) for all the other instruments ensuring that the lead vocal is always in THE lead LOL!

I have Ableton Live but rarely use it - it's mostly for a break from the norm, to have fun just toying around and maybe come up with snippets of ideas which I then go back to the piano or guitar and finish the composition from there.

You're right this was discussed on these forums before. I already have a much similar DAW (Live) and hardly use it because it hardly fits in with my preferred workflow.

Lego blocks are made of plastic.  Lincoln logs are made out of wood.

I loved my Lincoln Logs, never really was a Lego kind of guy, was too old before they became really popular.  Lincoln Logs and my Lite-Brite were toys I remember well.  That and real metal Tonka trucks and bigger GI Joe figures with Kung Fu grip.

I have some Lincoln Logs from the 50's. Bought them in Virginia in an antique store. My two older grandsons played with them quite often.

It's still going   http://www.meccanouk.co.uk/ However like many things its changed, and not necessarily for the better. Now you buy a kit that makes a certain model, in my day young man, it was more versatile we got a box of parts. a basic instruction book but mainly we had to use our imagination.

I had a very large set because in addition to the parts I had been bought I had parts that had belonged to my father and uncles when they were young but the best thing was when, one Christmas, I got the meths fueled steam engine  (1965 model I think )and the cog set where you could even build your own gear box with a shift lever.

I remember the Lincoln logs...... I spent many hours building cabins.....

But the really cool thing was the Erector Set..... metal with sharp edges that would shave flesh off your fingers if you were not careful...... electric motors and nuts and bolts to make all sorts of things that inspired the imaginations of generations of kids.

And then...there were the chemistry sets...... with beakers and test tubes, and bottles of toxic substances that changed colors, smoked, and boiled over.....

I like where this thread is going, from Lincoln Logs to the Erector Set. What's next, Tinker Toys?

The wonderful memories of simplicity remind many of us that creativity and innovation can be self induced without technology. Nevertheless, I am a computer and technology addict, and there's no turning back.
