Using Sonar as MTC Master / Triggering and Locating Etc. for Live Performance?
Hi guys,
Hope Easter was good to everybody :)
This is quite an involved post - my apologies - so I have put the question first and the background after!
QUESTION:
Is there a way of mapping markers in Sonar to MIDI notes/controller/MSC commands, or even keystrokes (I suppose I could use Bome's MIDI Translator to convert the MIDI to keystrokes, unless the latency is unacceptable) in the same way as is possible with Ableton Live?
If not, would MMC in combination with MSC work?
BACKGROUND:
I'm in the process of setting up a workshop production of a new musical (my musical, actually, so I have something of a vested interest ;) ), and Sonar is one of the options I'm looking at for track playback / MTC / MIDI triggering etc. I was originally looking at using Ableton Live, because of its ability to map markers/locators to MIDI notes, but sadly Live can't act as an MTC master. Also, Sonar is what I am using to create the click tracks in the first place, so it could be useful to keep everything "in one package".
I will be using Show Cue System (
http://www.showcuesystems.com/) as the "master" trigger on a laptop sitting on top of my keyboard. This will trigger Sonar, which will play back multitrack audio stems (with automation etc.) and a few MIDI tracks to trigger the media server (Resolume Arena) and digital environment system (custom software based on the Unreal game engine along with Bome's MIDI Translator to turn the MIDI back into keystrokes). Sonar will also be used to generate MIDI timecode to control the lighting desk (an ETC Ion).
I hope that makes sense to people!
Many thanks,
Martin
