Monitor/Resolution/Size Q

Hi guys. I'm going to order a new PC soon with 3 or 4 monitor ports and was thinking about my screen setup. I want three ~17" screens and then a big monster above them taking up pretty much the same length.
Currently I have a 21" 1920x1080.
Now, I am clueless about resolutions and HD etc. I thought I understood until HD came along, and it seems that 1920x1080 can have MORE space than my normal 1920x1080 monitor. Or something like that..I don't know haha.
Currently I can only see 18 wide strip channels. I want to see a lot more and could do with them being smaller (but same info shown so still wide strip).
I understand with a bigger screen I can do that, but I am struggling to comprehend how my 1920x1080 screen can show less than these new HD things marketed as 1080p also.
Educate me!
Thanks!:)

18 wide strip channels is about the max any HD 1920x1080 monitor could do. Getting a bigger 1920x1080 only enables bigger strip channels, but still 18. To see more than that, you need bigger resolution, Dell ultra sharp 30" (2560x1600) is one of those.

I think you need a DVI (or double HDMI cable to run those higher than 1920x1080 resolution, using up 2 HDMI output).. I may be wrong.

You can also add more than one video card to have more output. Preferably the same model.. but I'm running 2 fan less card (due to mistake in buying less output, but further experimental putting them together works), a Radeon and Nvidia to drive 3 monitors (2x Samsung 29"  27" + 1x Dell 21.5")  without any issue. Just make sure there is enough power supply.
