good idea - could be a check when sonar is launched (a la s1), or even a separate windows service running independently (a la ni service centre)

I think there's a very good case *against* auto updates for DAW software, and it's that installing patches willy-nilly as soon as they come out is really to be discouraged, I think. It's always more sensible to wait for some down-time and do it in between projects or during some reasonable down-time.

having a choice to download but not install until a user clicks on "install now" would be most helpful. I would not like it to automatically update for me without my express permission. windows allows 3 choices - automatic at a certain time you specify, download and notify, or OFF (manual) updates. IMO, that would be ideal.

I can imagine the whining and gnashing of teeth when people who don't want their carefully tuned system touched in any way has been upgraded overnight.

It's one of the most often repeated recommendations on this forum NOT to have internet access in your DAW computer. Many don't consider it a risk at all, but anyways. Thinking about how much surprises the a-b-c-d-updates of X1 have included I'd consider it a true nightmare if such were automatically installed overnight.
SONAR PE 8.5.3, Asus P5B, 2,4 Ghz Dual Core, 4 Gb RAM, GF 7300, EMU 1820, Bluetube Pre - Kontakt4, Ozone, Addictive Drums, PSP Mixpack2, Melda Creative Pack, Melodyne Plugin etc. The benefit of being a middle aged amateur is the low number of years of frustration ahead of you.

so a preferred solution could just be a clearer communication of versions/patches from the bakers?

It would help a lot, however, if they would just code the updates correctly. IMO, the updates are not done well. why would you not code the update so that an installer can detect which version you have, roll back if necessary and install the correct version you need? that's completely "do-able" another thing that bugs me about installation is that I always install both 32bit and 64bit on my 64bit OS so that if something doesn't work in 64bit (GASP!) I can switch over to the 32bit version. doesn't happen often, but occassionally I want to run the 32 bit version even if it's just to see if the behavior I'm seeing is likely caused by bitbridge or not. why can't the installer program allow you to choose to install BOTH versions? why should I have to run the installer a 2nd time just to get the other version installed if I want both versions installed?

a simple 'check for updates' button would do the trick.

Bristol_Jonesey You mean like this ? he he - yeah I suppose that works :) Something a little bit more intuitive would be better though. Something that cross checks the version that you are using against available updates. Most of the people on this forum (me included) follow Cake's every move. For the more casual user a simple button from within the program makes sense. If you don't want to click it or your DAW is not online then it's your choice.

It's bookmarked in my Favorites/Music/Sonar folder but I see it's missing things like Quickfixes so it's not all inclusive. Even an Updates link in the Help/Sonar Online/ menu would be cool. Funny that the Help/Sonar Online/Support link gives you this:"Oops - we couldn't find the page you were looking for." Does that mean there's really no such thing as Sonar Support?

Quickfixes are rolled into the latest update and made unavailable, as they're not fully tested in the "quick" form.

John T I think there's a very good case *against* auto updates for DAW software, and it's that installing patches willy-nilly as soon as they come out is really to be discouraged, I think. It's always more sensible to wait for some down-time and do it in between projects or during some reasonable down-time. Firstly you should be given a choice to update what you want when you want just like Windows update can (i.e. If you want quickfixes, cool, if not, cool). Secondly if Cake is sensible it would not make autoupdates available until, say, a month after release so die hard patchers (i.e. a smaller set of people) will effectively test the patches first (by downloading via web page). You should STILL be able to download patches manually via a web page as well. Finally if people don't want an update service at all they can simply disable the service under Windows/Services. Everybody happy.. Cheers....
