Unable to pan my mono tracks...

OK - so I've finally "committed" to Cakewalk and X1 - from my Edirol UA-25EX to X1-Studio and A300Pro controller. I've been using other low-end tools but wanted to step up to a more "professional" system for this next CD project.

Everything seems OK, but I can't seem to pan the mono tracks I've recorded. Checked and tried everything logical. No go.
I loaded the Mixing Tutorial, and I am able to pan those tracks OK - so it has to be something with the way I recorded the tracks (they're both in the R channel - because that's where the Hi-Z input is on my interface.)

When I pan these tracks during playback - the meter stays on the right channel. If I pan files that were imported (in stereo) the panning clearly works. If I pan the Mixing Turorial mono files, it works there too.

Seems like I'm missing something simple, but I'm stuck. Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Ray

Convert the track to a mono track and try that

Pick,

Make sure the "Interleave" button isn't on...

If it is I don't think it will pan....button looks like a bunch of lines that get smaller in the middle...

Just a thought...

If the interleave button doesnt work,
Click on the track No# in Track View which will select/highlight the track.
Right click on the Highlighted recording and select convert to Mono track,

More info can be found on Pg 199 of Ref Guide

Thanks Mike,
The two tracks I'm having issues with appear to be mono, but upon closer inspection, it looks like they are stereo tracks with only the Right side containing information.

How do I "convert" them? Export and re-import? Or is there another process?

Thanks much...

Got it ... I was looking for that command but it doesn't show up unless the track in highlighted. And it's not easy to find in the Help section.

Appreciate the quick (and correct) response.

Ray

P.S. - and the interleave was on - I need to learn what that does exactly. Thanks for the tips guys.

The interleave didn't have anything to do with your problem, leave it on unless you have a real good reason to turn it off.

The problem you were having is that Sonar's "pan" function is just a level control and not an actual "imager".

My guess is that you were panning left and it was turning up the silence on the left track and turning down the sound on the right channel and that did not create the impression of panning.

Channel tools could have helped but it is much more sensible to simply convert to mono, as you have, and now you can proceed with full flexibility.

best regards,
mike

Glad you were able to get that worked out, Ray, but just so you know, there is a situation in Sonar (and possibly any DAW) where panning will NOT work... Say that you record two separate electric guitar tracks, and would like to pan one 50% L and the other 50% R. Doing so with the raw tracks themselves will be no problem. HOWEVER, say that you want to run both tracks through an amp simulator like Peavey ReValver or Amplitube 3. The desirable way to do that would be to set up a stereo bus and send both guitar tracks to it. Then assign the amp sim to the bus. That way you only have one instance of the amp sim, which are typically big CPU hogs. Sounds like a plan, right? Well, it works fine, EXCEPT that both guitar tracks running through the amp sim will sound dead center...the panning won't work. Anyway, hopefully you won't ever need to do that, as the only way to keep the panning AND the amp sim on both tracks is to assign two instances of the amp sim, one instance to each track, and bypass the bus setup. Sorry to hijack your thread, it's just that I'm jealous that you were helped in getting your problem solved, and I wasn't--lol.
