Session Drummer and articulations (choke, hihat pedal etc) trigger with Alesis DM8
I just purchased an Alesis DM8 and have connected to trigger Session Drummer. 95% of everything is already mapped. However I have not figured out how to map the cymbal choke and the hi hat pedal and or found the samples which would correspond to the articulation. I also have BFD2 and was able to make a drum map. BFD2 is cool however more labor intensive. SD3 came with a few drum kits that I really like and it sounds good and is easy to use. Anyone know how to create a drum map for session drummer and how/where to get the additional samples (if they are available). Also, I have created the drum map for the Alesis DM8 to control BFD2 if anyone needs it.

I want someone to prove me wrong, but I think SD2/3 was not setup for all those "extras". TBH, I have not tried to get them out of SD2/3 but I just don't use them unless someone sends me a project with them in there and even then I don't inpsect the MIDI. FWIW, it's only happened twice and one I simply replaced the drums entirely. The other time I used exactly what was there.

I wonder if SessionDrummer is eDrum-compatible. But I would be suprised if BFD is not. I have SuperiorDrummer 2 and there they have a ready mapping for eDrums and it worked right out of the box with a Yamaha drumbrain. Check what is available inside SessionDrummer and BFD about this. I would experiment from a midi keyboard and see if/how you can get different openness of hihat. Closed HH are usually at F#, and fully open at A#. As I understand it there are two ways to have the HH pedal work in the drumbrain: 1. Sense the position of pedal when hit, and send a different midi note for each(or at least a couple of different ones). 2. Send the CC04 with a value and let other end interpret it to correct samples. So check out if there possibly is a setting in drumbrain for different approach. And check specs of SessionDrummer regarding midi stuff. And there are many ways for a drumbrain to send chokes as well. Some use aftertouch, some don't. In the Yamaha brain you can set different approach to sending notes, whether note off are sent and when, if sensing a choke and then sending it. Check out how Alesis brain does it.

Isn't it key maps and not drum maps you need if you're using it with edrums? At least you can use BFD2 in stand alone mode, it has a key map for the Aleisis DM5 & DM5 Pro included in it's key maps. Have you loaded either of these? I'm not sure if they differ from DM8 but I would imagine they would be pretty much the same. If they need altering than mapping in BFD2 is simply a case of dragging the kit piece articulation, "or choke in this case" to the keyboard on the left and then saving it as a key map preset. Very quick and very easy. I'm not an edrummer yet but I hope to be soon :) Have you posted on the BFD2 forum? SD2 can be played with edrums but it's not really fit for purpose. I would really recommend learning more about BFD2 and how to create your own tailor made kits. I know it's daunting at first but it offers you so much more than SD2 ever could, you just got to learn how to get the best out of it. Steve

I found a way to get a cymbal choke when I converted a midi drum sample to a step sequencer clip. Here's what I found. Cymbal name followed by note number. (clshat-42) For my closed Hat. (opnhat-46) For the open Hat. (pdlhat-44) For the choke closed.

Thanks to all that replied. I think the correct term is Key map, thanks for point tahat out. BFD2 does everything and more that I would need. I have it working and it works pretty good. However SD3 has a few drumset that I really like. I do have the edrums controlling SD3, there are just a few peices I have not gotten to work yet (high hat pedal, cybal choke). I am not sure where to find/change the keymap for SD3. Does anyone know ?

Something else that may be of use to you with BFD2 I just read on the BFD2 forum is a quick guide on creating midi maps. On the mapping page in BFD2, clear all keys and make sure the box called "midi select" is checked. Then just hit your first pad, this will select the corresponding key, so you just assign what ever kitpiece and articulation you want on that pad. Do this for all of your avaiable pads and you have your custom map as you want. Finally save your keymap in order to use it in other projects. Not sure if this would work for chokes though because they are assigned to different groups. Could be a case RTFM Hope this helps Steve

Thanks, I watched a couple of youtube vids and learned a bit. Seems like the articualtions are part of each BFD2 kit peice. as far as the choke, that is a seperate trigger, however seems the hat pedal is controlling/damping velocity. I notice when i step on the hat pedal, i don't get a note, just a velocity. any i guess I will dive deep into BFD2. Really wish I knew how to do similar with Session Drummer 3.
