Muting a track but alowing play back during another track recording

I have poke, pressed, read, tried, ... all the options that I think have to due with original recording. I want to record two guitars. I can due it but I have to mute one out completly or I record the first track onto the second track without the new guitar line. I want to play back over monitors the first track and jam out to it to see if I can come up with one line to record over the first. Like I said when I do, other than muting the first track, I only record the first track to the second track.

In other words how can I play a base line over the guitar track. I cant figure it out and Ive been trying for three weeks. Help...

You mention the Allen & Heath as a mixer, but you use it as your audio interface as well, right?
I don't know what kind of software comes with A&E, but somewhere is a setting called "Stereo mix" or "What you hear" which causes everything that is played back getting recorded on the recording track. Maybe with the mixer there are other possibilities for the wrong routing as well. You must try to follow the signal and spot where it gets routed back to input.

I assume your integrated sound chip is not selected for anything in SONARs Options dialogue.
If there are native ASIO drivers for A&E, use them.

I don't have the Zed, but I have been looking at the manual for a while.
It looks like the USB section is kind of tricky, and I suspect this is where you are getting tangled up.
It hinges around the USB RTN button and the USB SEND selection.
When you record the first track, what buttons/knobs are you using?
Where is the guitar plugged in(which input)?
Are you using the same input for the second (bass) track?
The only connection between the Zed and your PC is the USB cable, correct?
The USB I/O to and from Sonar is pretty well defined. We just need to figure out to route it through the mixer.

Kalle and Bob. Youre both on the right path. Im so new to this that I didnt know I needed to know anything about the interface, yes Kalle the mixer. I need to, as the path takes me, try one, change the master buses routing. Now Im getting lost. I dont want to say that I jumped in to deep but Im going to need more than alot. Sorry to all but I like what you said Bob, "we" just need to figure...      Thank you. Im going to keep pushing and I know this isnt as bad as it seems. Thank you.

    Have you made any progress?
I wish I was more familiar with the Zed. It looks like a very sophisticated mixer. I have access to the manual, but I can't touch it and turn the knobs. You can.
I can offer what I think you need to do, but you will need to report back, and tell us what it did.
Working together, we can get you going.
You mentioned learning trig in your profile notes. Geometry is my thing. If I can take something from the abstract, and visualize it, I can run with it.
At the moment, I believe you are still in the abstract. Don't worry, you have the right attitude.
Yes, you are in deep. You have some complex hardware, and equally complex software.
Break it down. It's really just several simple things working together as a system.
When I started out, I was every bit as green as you are, and felt just as overwhelmed. It takes some time, but it does all come together.
As Kalle noted, signal path is key.
I would suggest plotting your signal path on paper. The path should be fairly linear, and any break should become evident.
Above all, don't be afraid to ask questions. We are here to help, and we've all been there.
