The Northwestern US
If you've never been? You should go. It's really a breathtaking part of a breathtaking country. I recently had a biz trip to the Seattle area. I'm normally in the South East, but I have to say, the North West is simply spectacular. You should see it if you haven't. And up in to Vancouver BC and points north of there. It's like a documentry, simply amazing.

I completely agree with you on Seattle. I can only guess that you're also correct on Vancouver since I haven't been there yet.

Been to Vancouver a few times. Resilient city IMO. It's still standing after putting up with me a few times.

Real quick before I get banned ... ;) ... I love the NW. The cool weather and smell of the pine trees really opens up my airways. I have bad allergies. You have to go to Shenanigans Restaurant in Spokane. OMG. What a meal.

+1 The Olympic peninsula is one of my favorite areas. I like the mountains, but I really enjoy the sea stacks at Ruby Beach and the deep, ancient silence of the Quinault rain forest.

Yes, it is great. One does have to like rain, or drizzle, or drizzling rain, or raining drizzle, or drizzling drizzle rain that has just stopped raining a drizzling raining drizzle... At least west of the Cascades for most of the year it either 1) is raining, 2) has just stopped raining, or 3) is about to rain. Seattle does have an advantage of being in the rain shadow of the Olympic Peninsula. What makes the Olympic Peninsula so wonderful is that it is the only temperate rain forest in the world (Hoh River Valley averages 175+ inches of rain a year). Portland has the distinction of having the most cloudy days (i.e. fewest sunny days) of any major city in the country (even more than Seattle).

I live in Washington right now (barely, I'm right by the Columbia River across from Portland Oregon), but I'm curious. Is the Seattle area any better than down near Portland? I'm only asking because I keep hearing how similar the two Vancouvers are (the one in BC Canada and the one I'm about two miles away from in Washington). I've heard that Seattle gets about the same amount of rain as we do down here, however it's spread out over many more days (like noldar12 is mentioning above).

Craigb, a couple differences: Seattle: protected somewhat by the Olympic Peninsula, and temperature moderated by being on Puget Sound; Portland/Vancouver, WA: exposed to weather that funnels down the Columbia River Gorge. That is one reason, while not getting much snow, the Portland/Vancouver area is vulnerable to severe freezing rain storms (usually a nasty one every couple/few years). Note: I will admit that after 6-7 days (almost exclusively during summer) of no drizzle/rain, I start missing it.
