10 year old (barely used) Motu 828 for $100. Should I?
On Windows7, 64-bit, running Sonar X1 Studio (d) with a dead-in-the-water M-Audio Fast Track Ultra. I was gonna save up for a Focusrite Scarlett 8i6, but a friend of a friend has this older, barely used, Motu 828 for sale. For $100. It's not the FireWire/USB hybrid, but I do have a VIA IEEE 1394 port (I note that there was an issue with TI chipsets? Mine is not) Should I? Even without a warranty?

I could be wrong - but I think the MOTU 828 (original) doesn't have win7x64 drivers. Someone else may know better, tho.

To be clear, is it the original 828 or the 828 mkII? If it's really the mkII, then snap it up. If it's the original, then I don't know.

Not the mkII, Steve. If it were I might have already bought it. :) So... I'll look into the drivers, Beagle. Thanks, buddy.

i dont think she'll find ANY interfaces that are at those links, close to the hundred bucks asking price for the one in question. at least not any worth having.

the scarlette might be OK, if they got the bugs worked out of their drivers.

Ha! Thanks, Spacealf.... I've been round and round with this in my head. The deal is this-- while I'm not poor or anything, we just don't have the "extra" money to get something amazing, although I would be seriously happy to have an RME or a new Motu 828MKII. So, after researching within my price range, I decided on the Focusrite Scarlett. People seem really happy with thee Mic Pres for the price, and the Scarlett version comes with some decent modeling software. I'd been saving for that when the used Motu 828 (original model) came to my attention. (The other option in that range is a new MAudio, but seeing how all I've had nothing but problems from my current FTU, I'm not inclined to buy another. It's been replaced by MAudio TWICE, and now they are ignoring my forum post (and it even has a sticky). Not inclined to call customer service and pay for a phone consult, which is their new thing.) So... Tried to look at the Motu site for driver info this morning, learned you couldn't even look without registering to the site, registered and waited for the password email. Nothing. Added them to safe senders list, just in case... Waited. Registered AGAIN...nothing. Checked my ISP account. nada. SO. Not really thrilled with Motu's service.... If i cant even get registered to the site, it doesn't bode well for future. Beagle, the driver issues that I've seen, with regard to the Scarlett, did not apply to Windows7 or my chipset. That's what I remember, anyway. If you've seen something else, could you pass it along? Still.... The Motu... It's a damn good deal, I think. So, I dunno.... No one has jumped in to say, "You're an idiot if you get the Scarlett over the Motu", though....

Yeah MOTU support is atrocious, IMO. And I've been dealing with them since the mid '90s when I used Performer.
I had a look on their site, and the drivers say (among other things) "...Supported legacy MOTU products include the 1224, 1296, 2408, 2408mkII, 24i, 308, 828, 828mkII, 896, 896HD, Traveler, and the UltraLite." So it looks like drivers are available. Both 32- and 64-bit.
As for the Scarlett vs the 828... I really dunno what I would do.

Thanks for checking for me, Steve! Really nice of you. If I buy it, I'll still have to figure out how to get on the site... LOL!

AFAIK I'd say if it has drivers for W7 32 and 64 then break the persons arm off. $100 isn't going to get you far with anything else, and certainly not with that amount of I/O I'm not sure if the age is much of a concern there are still plenty of 'new' interfaces out there that haven't seen any new engineering for a long time. The drivers are the key thing here IMO.

I agree with JB. if the drivers are available, then go for the MOTU! re: the scarlette drivers, I don't know any details about what problems there were. only what I've read here on the forums, which I know you've read too, so if everything is OK with win7x64 drivers for it as far as you know then that should be OK. but I'd be leaning toward the MOTU myself. edit to add: I just logged into MOTU and confirmed the same thing that SCorey found.

The main issue is if the things works at the price it is being sold for. I check it out first then pay for it.

For what it's worth, I own the Focusrite Scarlett 8i6 (I have had it almost a year) and I have never had any issues with drivers. It has worked flawlessly for me and for the price, I think you will be happy with it

if the seller is a friend..... ask to use it and try it out for a few days. Then, if it works fine, and you are satisfied with it, pay for it ..............or return it if it doesn't do the job.

Or at least be able to get your money back if not adequate for what you want. Paper trail I guess then.
